Recabling Audio Technica ES7s?

I have somehow managed to break the wire on my ATH-ES7s at the joint between the two single cables coming from each driver to the main cable that terminates with the 3.5mm jack. At £80 I wouldn't call them cheap, and having already had a rather nice bike nicked this term at uni I don't want to shell out money for replacements headphones - besides, I rather like the ES7s. As such I want to recable them.

I want to do a proper job of it, and my suspicion is that the best result will be achieved not by putting a new joint on the two cables coming from the drivers, but instead to completely recable them from the drivers down - while I'm at it, I can then use a strong cable & joint and avoid a repeat incident.

My question is this - does anyone have any idea how I can non-destructively open up the drivers so I can connect up new cable to them?

Cheers,
Mr. Brightside

OK, update. I've just figured out how to take the drivers apart, and I've got one open in front of me. As I said, my intention is to make an entirely new cable for it and hardwire that on.

Has anyone made their own headphone cables before? Can anyone recommend wire/jack options, and what the best way of binding the wires together up to/at the split is? Alternatively, do their exist suitable premade cable assemblies I could buy and fit myself? Any suggestions/ideas would be much appreciated. I want to keep it terminated with a 3.5mm jack though because I use them as portables.

Thanks,
Mr. Brightside

Went to a popular electronics store about 100 minutes ago with the intention of buying some wire, heatshrink, and a jack that I had identified online as suitable. They didn't have the wire in stock, nor a suitable alternative.

I had an idea while I was there and came back with a cheap enough (£10) pair of Genius in-ear things, which made a perfect donor. Thirty minutes of careful soldering/burning enamel off shielding later and I now have my ES7s back in perfect working order.

I'm rather pleased that I've managed to fix them up with a decent enough cable for £10. Beats paying £80 for a new pair.

If anyone at some point in the future wants advice on recabling the ES7s, this thread is here, so feel free to ask me.
