bmw m5 the new 1 will do you great!

i got 1 what a car! :D :D :D

Various factors, not least the fact you are trying to recommend a £60,000 car with a long waiting list to somebody after a £15k car, suggest to me you... are a liar :p

I would LOVE to be proved wrong though as IMHO there is no such thing as too many M5 pictures.

They didn't fall into the price/age bracket I was looking at.

My max budget was 10k and I didn't want to go over 4 years old.

Yea, you tend to have to pay more for quality cars that are well sought after, though ;)

Would have considered a 5 year old 530i over a 4 year old 520i every single day of the week though.

If you're stumping up the cash then it's your choice, but as far as I was concerned the newer the better.

I know you have a love of all things bavarian, but for me they are only marginally better than other offerings and not worth the inflated prices that are partially the result of great engineering, but also partially the result of better brand management.

Most folks I know who drive BMW's don't know why and they never tested anything else. They have been told they are great and so they want one.

There are other cars out there that represent a better deal.

This is a legitimate problem. For me, image is meaningless - I drive a Mondeo and used to own a Xantia at the age when image is everything. I simply buy what I personally feel is the best. I feel the 5 Series is the best, unfortunately, lots of people also feel it's a great way to have the neighbours think they are super cool - so they buy one becuase of the badge.

They neither know, care, nor appreciate many of the finer points of the car, settling only for the fact 'its a BMW'. The demand from these people keeps residuals high and, keeps prices up.

As a result, the 5 Series is many great things - but one thing it most certainly is not is value for money. I've never said it's a good value car, and I never will, becuase it isn't.

£9k gets a really nice 530i Sport now. However, said 530i Sport will be X or Y reg unless its very high mileage. £9k is a LOT of money for a 5-6 year old car.

Some of the bigger engined variants can be argued to be quite good value - 286bhp for £4k via a 97 540i anyway - but on the whole, they are often much older than potential rivals. Still better, IMHO, but not everyone is content to buy an older car.

I know it's a concern I've had, I posted here about it a few weeks ago.

Nissan 200sx S14a Touring

2.0 turbo, rwd, moddable, 4 seats, and a pretty reasonable boot.
Cant see many people wanting one of these if they have a 16K budget available.

But he might be tempted by an import S15 200sx. That would be what I would buy. I think most people would be swayed by an import Integra at that price bracket especially if they dont want to mod.

I've spent the day looking through websites and an S4 looks to be the front runner.

BMW touring would be good, but I've has a BMW in the past.. Nice cars.. expensive to maintain :(

They cost more to maintain than, say, a Ford Focus but the non M versions are hardly supercars and do not attract enormous running costs.

Certainly not any more expensive to run than an S4!

Everyone doen't need to suggest estates. I can fiit my clubs into my little Bravo hatchback.

£15-16K??

I think you've got a wide choice of stuff to choose from..

If it was my money..

Almost new Focus ST/VXR Astra if you want sporty..
New Skoda Octavia VRs..

I think for the money, an Audi A4 saloon, with sports styling, 1.8T or 2.0 TDI, or whatever.. very good looking car with nice interior..

Yeah but if he's looking at Audi's, the estate is so much cooler ;)

I can't believe I've not pimped the Mondeo ST220 Estate.

So there we go, pimped it now. 3.0 V6, 222bhp, 0-60 6.9 seconds, and you'll get a 2005 for this money.

Even brand new you can get them for £18k.
