Hey there guys, i've been looking over the forum, and am really stuck for a choice of 19" WS tft between:

Asus VW192S 19" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black (140 inc VAT)
Belinea 1925S1W 19" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black/Silver (147 inc VAT)
Hyundai ImageQuest N91W 19" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black (170 inc VAT)
OcUK Value Hanns-G HW191D 19" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Silver (144 inc VAT)
Samsung SM-940BW 19" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Silver/Black (170 inc VAT)

The price on all seems fine and thats not really the issue, i just wanna be sure that i can get the one that will suit best, i saw the samsung reviewed around on a couple websites and it got good reviews, i like the 90 degree rotation of the Asus, the dvi on Samsung & Hyundai, but have also been told the OcUK & Belinea ones were good also, so i'm in a bit of a make up my mind phase as i plan to order this weekend.

Help me OcUkey-Kenobi, you're my only hope!! :D

Thanks!

I recommend

Samsung 940bf

I have one. Has dvi and is 2ms. Get it for £190 del from popular online store.

940bf isnt wide but wide screen will be an issue with gaming.

Just wondering what issue will it be with games then? As i'm looking to getting a widescreen monitor.

Thanks.

the issue is that most games dont support widescreen resolution out of the box. However some (like Halflife) do. Others (like need for speed most wanted and Battlefield 2) can with a bit of reading up and tinkering with config files or command lines.

have a look at www.widescreengamingforum.com for a list of what games can or cant be run in widescreen.

I own a 20" WS. and use my machine allmost exclusively for gaming, and i've never had a problem. oh and CS:source looks amazing in ws.

Hyundai seems to be rated pretty well around here.

Ok just another quick question please.
I've seen this "The GNR TS902W will not fail to impress with its vast array of features and its excellent cost-performance ratio. It's 16: 10 wide screen aspect provides the user with more valuable workspace for multiple windows, high definition video playback and a totally immersive gaming experience, particularly in fast paced first person shooters! The screen's 8ms, 300cd/m² (typ), 500: 1 contrast ratio (typ) and 16: 10 1440 x 900 pixel optimum resolution produce crystal clear text and full bodied graphical color. Put style into your workplace, put in the TS902W"

Does it mean it plays back on HD? So i could download a trailer HD and it will play it back in HD?

I've been out of the monitor game for like 12 years got a 14inch sony!. So i'm upgrading when i upgrade my system. But i just can't work out if it plays HD or not?

Thanks.

any monitor will play HD

but not any monitor will play HD DVD or Blu Ray DVD. For that you need a monitor with HDCP. Only a few have these, the Dell 2007WFP, the 24" 2407WFP and the 24" Ben Q

not sure about any other but i think thats it.

nope

HD will play just fine over DVI or VGA

if you think about it, i was running 1600 x 1200 Unreal Tournament years ago on my 19" CRT.

and 1600 x 1200 is higher detail than 1080P as 1080P only has 1080 vertical lines, 1600 x 1200 is 1200 vertical lines

PC has allways been hi-def. Its just the advent of content providers wanting to encrypt the output via HDCP that some stuff have been able to display it, and others not.

1080p = 1920*1080 in progressive scan so in essenece dipicts slightly more then 1600*1200 just at a different ratio.
I peronally have seen the TS902W but under different brand names, AOC and GNR, its a very genric looking monitor, with good response but colour and brightness seemed very poor, i would rather spend the money on the hyundai, which seems to be rated highly(without actually using one) or spend abit more on a 20" or 22" screen.

Thanks for the input, sadly the more on a 20 or 22 is probably not an option for now, and due to limited desk space a 19 will be more than adequate, i'm pretty much sold on the Hyundai now if not just because it has dvi and looks as nice as the samsung, the asus rotate feature still has me thinking maybe but again the lack of dvi is a real pain there, and i need to make up my mind quickly as i have to order a case for my gf's mum tonight!

Decisions decisions!!

your only kidding yourself into not spending more money

the 20" widescreen is 1inch diagonally bigger. thats less than an inch in width terms

honestly, an extra 3/4 isnt going to take up "desk space" unless you're stuck in a cupboard.

Very true, but at the same time i really don't know about spending the extra X amount :( But out of curiosity, to say i was to go for a 20, what would you recommend then? :)

LG L204WT is a very good monitor and a great price

probably dell 207 or 2007... the 207 is not sold on here yet but people reckon its the 20" bargain screen;) whereas the 2007 has more inputs for devices...
now were talking 20" how about 22";)

Ok, to clear up some confusion here:

HD simply refers to high resolution image output (eg 1080p). This is nothing new for PCs, all the excitement is over HDTV and HDDVD/Blueray where such resolutions are new.

Now.
You can output HD to any display that supports those resolutions. You can't output HDDVD (I'm going to start using that to mean Blueray too) to all of those displays, and you can't output HDDVD on VGA (or any other analog cable, eg RGB composite), period.

This is because the movie studios have imposed a requirement for there to be end to end copy protection - secure drives, secure players or operating systems, secure signal cables, and secure displays.

What is required:
An HDDVD drive.
Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista.
A graphics card with DVI with HDCP support, or HDMI with HDCP support.
A monitor with DVI with HDCP support, or HDMI with HDCP support.

If you can't put a check-mark next to any of those points, then it will not work, period. This is regardless of other hardware requirements (processor, memory, etc).

what was there to clear up i know that?! i was refering to the actual resolution of 1080p... High Definition Content Protection(HDCP) is similar to what they used to use with video recorders and tapes years ago when recording a tape to tape... it would output only half a picture if any... but now theyve created HDCP for HDDVD's and Bluray discs due to the amount of ripping and downloading of illegal content etc... it wont come into play for a year or 2 yet really, but even when it does me thinks there'll be a way around it.
