Hi there, first post here, I game at 1680x1050 res and am currently using a 8800GTS 640mb (the old one), and whilst its still a good card, cod4 for example runs maxed out with 2xaa etc, i want a bit of a boost since in certain games with AA its sort of starting to show its age, i am going to be selling it to a friend who is also a member on here for around £105, and i will be looking for a replacement for around £150, possibly a bit more. I was looking at the 8800GT but i think it wont really be much of a step up from my current card, so is the new 512mb GTS the best option to go for?

Rest of specs are [email protected], 4gb ram, gigabyte p35 board, corsair 520w psu.

thanks

ok thanks, was thinking the same, any more input? i could also get 3870xt crossfire since there having another price drop, although my 1x16 and 1x4 pcie slots would probably limit it.

So the GTS is probably best to go for? What about the new 9800GTX, how much will that be?

What about a ATI 3870x2? I'm in a very similar situation myself. From what I've read and seen, with Nvidia, I feel more inclined not to recommend them at the moment - based on driver support mostly and the new 9xxx cards.

I would love to get an X2 i really would but they are just so expensive atm, maybe if theres a price drop i could consider it and save a bit of money, but im still just 16 so money is tight.

Oh, and an 3870x2 wouldnt fit in my case i dont think either.

tbh I would not expect to be blown away by a performance increase though. I've owned both cards and when you start heaping the AA on they perform much the same.

hi

is your mobo xfire if so flog your gts and get a 3870 then when funds allow slap another 3870 in there and you will be flying
. i think your psu will be ok as well

cheers

There exactly the same card (slight oc on the GTX if you want to be pedantic). Less you are considering an eventual tri sli setup, go for the 512 GTS.

Martyn

the 512 GTS doesn't support tri-sli iirc,. And easy, doesn't the p35 chipset allow for reduced functionality of Xfire due to the x4 slot, and not, no xfire at all?

Can I just jump in here.

I've got a 8800GTS 640mb but don't understand how buying a 8800GTS 512mb will be a benefit?

I'll be selling some PC parts shortly which will give me £200 for another Nvidia card.

Well, it has 32 more shaders and it's clocked higher...so it's the faster card. I've owned both and it's quite a bit faster. If you have 200 quid and a SLI board I would get 9600gt cards in SLI :) Otherwise the 8800GTS is your best bet unless you can get a 3870x2 for under 200 quid.

So 2X 9600GT in SLI would see a fair whack of speed over my 640 GTS?

To be fair to it I've only really crippled it with Crysis on max everything :)
