Rechargeable battery mAh question

Yrp - as he said - a good D cell rechargeable will be "dense" - as in, it will weigh an absolute tonne....simply becuase the powdered chemical has been so compressed that it can hold a biggger store of energy. El-cheapo D cells will weigh virtually nothing (as they probably have the same amount of active chemical compressed inside them as as a good AA cell).

You will also find that cheapo AA rechargeables.... weigh less and have less capacity. I actually had some real cheapo 700mah AA's - that weighed barely anything - and lasted about 2 minutes in devices.

Yup - don't bother buying rechargeable C or D cells (unless you go for the proper ones) just get some AA to C/D adapters (about £1.50 for two) instead and buy lots of Eneloop AA cells.

Chances are if you have a rechargeable D battery with a capacity that low it is just a AA in a padded jacket.

Exactly, most D size rechargeable batteries are actually AA batteries fitted inside a D size outer shell.

It's not density, if you pull open a cheap D cell it'll be have an normal AA cell inside, with air or padding filling the space.

That's just an urban myth taken from some stupid YouTube video. I'm not saying that some Chinese manufacturer hasn't tried it on but I doubt this is a common place event.

Nearly all D cells weigh a lot more than AA's
That doesn't mean they are that much better as the quality of the materials varies a lot, but neither are they filled with air.

The only certain truth is that whatever capacity it states on the label is always made up

Although true of non rechargable batteries, the rechargable ones, if the same mAh, will just be the same inside.

I've never had a D cell that weighed anything like an AA cell? I think the chemistry just changes, it being easier to manufacture a given capacity in a larger format.
Empirically a cheap D cell lasts longer than a cheap AA cell when comparing like for like, almost nobody at that end would give a reliable mah rating anyway.

I did take one apart many years ago, it contained more or less what I expected.
