Hi,

has any used some thing like this,

Neewer® USB Battery Charger for LP-E6 Rechargeable Battery for Canon EOS 5D Mark II III 5DS 6D 7D 60D 60Da 70D 7D Mark II III

I still use the Canon supplied mains charger which of course needs a wall power socket.

For travelling a USB charger would be very usful as I have a 5 port USB power adpter. With output up to 2.4amps which enough for Tablets. I have even charge my Sony NEX 5R with the 5 port power adtper.

Many thanks

Just note that a USB charger will take considerably longer to charge than the wall outlet. So if you have time on your hands, then go for it. but as you want convenience, you probably also don't want to have to wait longer for a charge cycle to complete!

The Canon wall charger outputs at 8.4V 1.2A and standard USB output is typically 5V 1A.

The specs for the one you posted are quite strange.

Specifications:

Input Voltage: 5V.

Output Voltage: 8.4V (I assume it's 600mA).

How can something output more power than it is taking in? Has it found the holy grail of energy generation?!

I'm tempted to get one and attach the USB power meter to check it out and see what's what.

It's a boost converter Very common.
Increasing voltage doesn't mean it is producing more power than it draws. P = IV (amps * volts) so if it can draw 2A @ 5V (10W) it can provide 1.25A @ 8V less some loss of current for inefficiency. I have usb wall chargers capable of providing 2.4A @ 5v.

Whether the battery charger can actially draw the full 2.4A depends on whether the wiring is configured correctly for the wall charger to understand it.

I'd doubt that at this price they will draw the full amount and/or output the full amount (8v 1.2A which is what an LP-E6 needs to charge fast). The power output states 10W even, so it's slower by that measure comowred to the mains charger.

Going by the review comments on Amazon alone, one person says their LPE6 charged in just over 2 hours from empty, another says it took over 3 hours from 15%

It's cheap enough for me to buy one and use the USB power draw meter though, so I'll just do that and see what to make of it.

I have a Mu Duo 2 port USB folding 3 pin plug which has an output of 1.2amps and Samsung wall 3 pin USB charger with I believe an output of min 2 amps. Plus I take on holiday a Anker 5 port USB charger with each port having an out put of 2.4 amps per port.
I now charge my Samsung Smart phone, Tablet, AA eneloop rechargeable batteries and my Sony NEX 5R. All from one wall plug socket or USB cable in a car. It is one of the best things I have ever purchased for holiday.
Can my Canon LP-E6 can also be charge via USB, if so this will mean I can travel even lighter !
