single player but i believe you can play online with your friend against each other

X3 is a single player game only.

If you haven't already DL and install all the patches...

as for space RTS look at the homeworld series thats already been mentioned

Anyone aware of anything to Rival EVE in the MMO scene?

Personally what I want is Eve + 1man fighters (with joystick control) + controllable avatars around stations/ports. Elite style mining (land on 'roids/moons to drop mining platforms). I think this is all possible within Eve they just need to do it

There is a game in development called Beyond the Red Line which has a demo out. It uses the Freespace 2 source code. The demo is free to download and is a Battlestar Galactica sim. It is superb and if it ever reaches final release will be one heck of a fun game.

Eve is my bag though. Been playing 3.5 yrs and like tommy_trouble said, it does take some getting used to but really rocks and has a great community.
