Hi,
I might be hosting a LAN in a few months and on the list of games we'd like to play is a flight sim. Now its been a long time since I've played a flight sim and I've ordered BOB2 as I really enjoyed the first one. Anyway I was wondering whats a decent multiplayer flight sim, the last one I played was IL-2 FB and it was quite good. There is now a multipack of that and pacific fighters out so is that the best out there? Idealy it should be WW2 but modern sims are not black listed.
Cheers

Lock On: Modern air combat is a good game, but hard to learn and nnot the best of multiplayer manus.

Well thats the thing one of the people that will be coming will need it to be easy to pick up.

Microsofts Combat Flight Simulator 2 or 3 are both excellent over LAN.

CFS 2 is also very well supported, lots of add on's etc to spruce it up.

Ok I'll look into them but I thought CFS 2 and 3 were getting on.
Cheers

Yea and the thing is most modern FS tend to be stand off type games. Thats why it really has to be WW2 or about then. Might check out LOMAC for my own satisfaction though.

Falcon 4.0: Allied Force is the daddy of modern combat sims. However, be prepared for a steep learning curve. It's about a close to the real thing as you can get (and F-16s are pretty complex machines!).

Never tried it multiplayer, apparently it's pain to set up... So maybe not for you.

LOMAC is ok but its buggy and very hardware intensive. For what you are after i would go for the latest release of IL2 (all games on 1 DVD fully patched), very well coded and doesnt need an uber PC to run.

One quick question. With IL-2 can a few of you get on one plane? I.E. 3 people on a heavy bomber. It would be cool if you could have 3 on one plane and have the rest try and take the bomber out.

Wasnt there a flying fortress game a couple of years back where a load of you could fly in one plane for a mission? or was that feature taken out, i canno rememeber!

Unfortunately no, but I can't see that being a great game, bombers are essentially huge targets, the fighter would win every time. :(

For an arcadey flight sim multiplayer fun you still cant beat crimson skys.

LOMAC needs a degree in aircraft systems to play but its good.

Anyone try blazing angels on the PC? i tried the xbox 360 demo but someone came up with the stupidest controls ever by putting pitch and roll on diff sticks.

A full blown LAN campaign might be a headache, Tactical Engagements should be straight fwd enough with 5 or 6 minutes setting up, but if you just want to go head to head 1 to 1 or even 2 to 2 or whatever, it should be quite easy to set up and should be exhilarating dogfighting, especially if guns only are used.

I say *should* because it was real easy when my self and mates did F4 online furballs back in dial up days this way, and looking in the F4 Allied Force menu's, nothing much seems to have changed in this respect.

F4 can be intimidating at its highest level with ramp starts ETC, but its pretty scalable for those that just want to jump in, especially gun only online furballs.

Basically, you would all start in the air, need to know the padlock key/s and know when to press the trigger or cycle for guns or missiles and when to evade and release chaff and flares if you have a missile coming at you. One tip I'd give if you choose this method, don't allow unlimited gun ammo in the parameters, we found one guy was flying around with his finger on the trigger all the time, spraying the sky with lead, bound to get kills that way ... LOL

Also, if you all use the same aircraft, there can be no arguments afterwards because "x" aircraft has a better online flight model than aircraft "y" like you often see debated after IL2 FB/PF dogfights.

Oh Yes, forgot why we all stopped doing F4 online, it was because of the old patch, multiple mod dance to keep ourselves compatible, but this should not be a problem with F4 AF, so long as you all install and patch to same latest version.

Have fun, whatever you do though.

You sure about this ? I've played multiplayer co-ops where one person pilots the plane and the other occupies the gunners seat, (the IL2 Sturmovik for example)

I know you can get bots to fire automatically at targets if your in a bomber, but you can't do it in a standard game of IL-2/PF as far as i know.

There's possibly some 3rd party modification that allows for this, but i doubt it quite a bit. Personally, i think it would be a great idea. It would balance out the squads and make every man's role more worthwhile to protect the bombers.

Still we can dream eh... :p

Ach, yes you can in IL2, I fuzzled. The plane that springs to mind straight off is, ironically the IL2, later versions had 2 seats.

The latest version of IL2 has some nice heavy bombers, you can get 4 players in a He-111. :)

Yes. I can vouch for that, flown a HE111 in IL2 FB on Hyperlobby and had a multiplay crew, you can swap between stations in the bomber if you want. But you need to choose an online scenario that supports this.

If your (online friend in another town) decides to man the front gun/bomb aiming position in a HE 111, you "as a Pilot" can use the virtual cockpit to scroll down and see him there moving about, if he decides to man another position, you will just see his empty position.

Quite cool really.
