Been dabbling in some basic web design using Namo Webeditor 2006 recently.

I have almost completed a basic webpage for my fathers business and I'm now looking on some advice and recommendations to begin with, on where to go for web hosting.

Looking for ease of use and value for money at first, but with the option to upgrade at a later date. FTP software included would be a bonus, but not strictly essential at this point.

I also need to register a domain name. I've seen a few places that will do this for you and give webhosting as an additional extra. Or can I just register my domain name and go with someone else for webhosting?.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Is usually pretty good to have a look at.
Personally I started out with 1and1 ages ago. Domains are still with them, but the hosting isn't because support took forever and were a bit restrictive on wht could and couldn't be done.
Now I'm running a vps with another company and do all the admin/setup myself.

Edit:
Might be easier to register your domains with somewhere reputable and then seek hosting somewhere else. Some are crafty and won't let let go of the domain without a fight.
i.e. 123reg and godaddy are generally pretty good to register with, I think.

Just went with 123Reg for the domain name.

What are they like for web hosting as well?. Been looking at their packages too, seem not bad?.

www.streamline.net

great host for a personal site - i've been with them for a couple of months and they're great.
especially support tickets - get resolved within an hour generally during business hours. :D

Just for your information I have always used www.westhost.com. They're american but their support and features, plus prices have always been great for me. They have their own nifty control panel too.

go for vidahost deifently, just been setting up a new site and had many many questions sent over loads of emails, all replied in a matter of minutes. Thought it was going to take me days to get replies for what i wantef to know but it was so fast.

I know I post this in all these threads but if you've got a spare pc knocking about or have a PC that you keep on 24/7 then you've already got everything you need.
XAMPP gives you all the tools you need to run a webserver and you can get a domain and point it to your IP address :)

You're going to spend £100/year on electricity to power a website which will slow to a crawl if more than a handful of people want to access it, will break your ISP's AUP and clog up your internet connection rather than spend £20/year on some cheap virtual hosting which is hassle free, always on and always fast?

Seconded ;)

There are about 4 of us at Uni now with these guys, and we've all found them faultless!

Great value too, especially if you go for a 2 year deal.

Thanks for all the responses guys, its truly appreciated. ;)

I think I'm going to go with 123Reg. Thats who I registered the domain name I needed through and they seem to be very good from what I have read.

Anyone here used them?.
