BFME II beats Generals hands down for one reason alone. Siege battles (3 on 1) on maps like Helm's Deep, Minas Tirith, Minas Morgul etc. It's epic.

a few oldies:-

Midtown Madness 2, graphics look awful now but the get the gold races are mental.
1nsane, off-road driving game with lots of game modes.
Dawn of War, not such an oldie but a quality alternative to C&C.
Raven Shield is excellent, bloody hard though even as a team.
TOCA 2, kind of arcadey, requires a bit of skill but not much.
Soldier of Fortune 2
Far Cry where one team defends and the other attacks a base.

aint played for ages, from what i remember it was seriously CPU hungry since they didnt really use any potential of the graphics card

Definitely have to try JA. Especially if you can go online as a group to play - kicks ass!

Other great games include: UT2004/Generals/Warcraft 3 (new favourite)

One great thing to try is playing invasion in UT against godlike creatures with instagib at 5am - seriously tense!

With about 8 people UT2004 is great fun when playing onslaught/assault/invasion.

Generals + zh is also fun if your into RTS. What about Rome Total War? Always wanted to try it over lan with some mates.

I disagree, I've played COD2 in small LANs and some of the smaller maps are ideal, particularly the CTF games. BF/BF2 won't be that fun with only 8 people.
Q3A is still the king in my book, but I don't know if your friends would like an old skool-type shooter. AVP2 is an interesting choice, haven't played it in years and never managed to play online, but I seem to remember there's a game mode where one player's the Predator and the others are chasing him, or am I imagining this?
