hi all. im looking to upgrade my front speakers. i dont wonna send too much (£200 ish) at the minute i only have some "bookshelf" tdl items, there ok but dont offer much detail. im happy to stick with bookshelf style speakers but would consider some floorstanders.

i realise that £200 isnt a massive budget but ull just have to work with it.

my currant set up is:

marantz SR4400 amp
Kef coda 90 centre
gale something or other rears
mordant short 309 sub

Cheers all

Jason.

How big is the room?
What music do you play?
What sort of sound do you like?
Have you heard any speakers you like the sound of?
What do you have now? What don't you like about it?

the room is fairly small

i listen to a lot of different music rock/dance/pop

im looking for crisp trebble/detailed mid (as far as possible with budget) not too fussed about bass as my amp dosent push much out and i have a decent sub

i havent heard anything that i like, this is my first step

i have some budget TDL items. they just dont seem clear/detailed enough when its turned up to "listening" volume, they seem a bit cluttered and muddy

cheers for the reply

Jason.

sure i can get all that for £200 lol ??

Go to ebay and search on 'Kef 5.1 System'

The reason I mention it is that that is very similar to my original 5.1 system before I started upgrading it and I also had a Marantz amp powering it, so I know they work well together, I also have an MS309.

hi mate.

would i not be better off just upgrading my fronts?

my centre is quite good and my rears are ok although i would like to have a centre rear.

i know i seem a bit noobie on the topic lol.

Well it kinda depends on what you want.

option a) spend £200 on some fab secondhand fronts - this will be great for music as you will have a nice pair of stereo speakers. My 103/4s cost me about £200, it took a bit of waiting but I got 'em in the end they are very good and have great bass extention and KEF Uni-Q technology that I love so much. Great musical reproduction but what are the draw backs? Well your system isn't going to be very well integreted, your speakers will be different tonally and when sound pans around them it will change in tone and clarity meaning that even with so very trick seting up you may notice pans between speakers.

b) Buy a decent mid range system with speakers which match each other and won't be swamped by your (quite frankly great) sub, did I mention I have one too ;). Disadvantages are that you will only have something like KEF q35 floorstanders at the front (these are great speakers in their own right) so your stereo listening won't be quite as good as it could be if you splurged all the dosh on just two speakers. Advantages, you will have a nicely integrated system which will be tonally balanced and well integreted, the Q95C will knock the socks off the Koda centre you have and the Q15s are stunning bookshelf speakers in their own right.

you could so the same with a non KEF system but I just happend to notice that one on Ebay and it is a steal :)

chees mate.
point taken and understood.

the first prob with the set on there is that the fronts and rears are black :(

i am looking down the road of getting a good "set" of speakers.

if i went for a set up similar to the one you have spec'd what should i use for a rear center??

Rear centres are over rated IMHO, I don't have one on either of my two set ups and don't miss it. The are tonely less essential and provide background noise in the main, you could use your old centre if you were desperate to have one.
