I am looking to upgrade from an Oc system i got a few years ago.
my budget it £1700 tops.
for than i need a monitor as i an still using a crt
a fast system for gaming and photo manipulation.
i like the new 17 sandybridge but with the recall on some systems i have my concerns.
the AMD Phenom2 looks nice but seems to only allow 8gb of ram.
so am i better off with the intel or the AMD and do you know if the stock of mother boards for the sandybridge has the problem sorted out?

at £1700, an intel is the only way to go. i would only reccommend an AMD if you were spending £600 or less

do you need an OS keyboard or mouse? and is there anything you will be salvaging from your old computer, or do you just want a completely new computer.

hows this for a starting point?

when you say photo editing, how serious is this. are we talking hundreds of layers in photoshop, or just messing around with the brightness and stuff, because if its not major, you can happily knock ~£100 off of that build

thank you Reaper 392 for that help. i do intend to keep my os,keyboard and mouse. this still leave me wondering about the recall issue with the sandybridge mother boards. anybody know if this recommended board is clear of the hub issue ?

all the B3 revision motherboards (like the one ive put in the basket) have this recall problem all sorted, so that wont be a problem.

you siad that you would be doing photo manipulation. how serious will this work be?
if we are talking hundreds of layers, then i THINK you should stick with the build i have.

if its just light stuff (touch up work), then replace the RAM and processor to these:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM £161.99
1 x OCZ Platinum 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Ultra Low Voltage Dual Channel Kit (OCZ3P1600C9ELV4GK) £36.98
Total : £208.57 (includes shipping : £8.00).

this will have no affect on the gaming whatsoever, which is why im asking about the photo editing

I am an A level Photography student (part time) so the Photoshop work is important to me as i might go on to further courses. thank you both for your reply to my post i think i will be ordering the recommended system later today.
