I've currently got a 350D but would like to have a go at film photography so i was hoping someone can recomend a cheap 2nd hand Canon camera to try. Ideally i don't want to spend more that £100.

Also do people have any recomendation on the type of film to use?

Well if you have a 350D -- it would obviously be a canon 35mm body you should be looking at

I have a 300V that never gets used at all these days, the follow up to it was the 300x
but are you sure you want a 35mm - having to buy the films and all the processing bills, plus the fact that your 350D allows you to see any rubbish you may have snapped, whereas with film you have to pay a pretty penny to see everything you snapped

these days there are not many that go back to shooting film

on the auction site there are often very high spec 35mm SLR's that cost a fortune originally, going for peanuts
cheers Chris

Canon EOS 5, cracking bodies which are going for about a ton on ebay, the only problem is your 350d may annoy you with features missing from the 5!

It's amazing how camera from like 8-10 years ago still ahead of modern day DSLR in terms of features. The first thing he'll notice when he picks it up is the built quality and then will be awe struck by the how bright the viewfinder is.

If he goes back even further to a 20 yr old slr he will notice even more. Not just better build quality, bright viewfinder, small size, no need for huge batteries etc but how all the contols are easy and quick to use dials instead of being hidden in menus ;) However, having to set all of these and focus manually may come as a shock :D

Forget the EOS 5s! There are EOS 3s out there for the same money - 45 point AF, Eye controlled focus point selection, 7fps (only a 36 frame buffer though :p ).

New maybe but not much more than £100 second hand.

Indeed, I consider myself fortunate to pick up a new one in auction for only £280. But, at a particular Scottish store that sells loads of secondhand gear you'll find that they are all about £270 for a decent example. A good EOS 50e would be about £70-£120 though.

EOS 3 IS a cracking body which is why I have two of them. Makes my EOS 30D seem like a toy in comparison. Stunningly fast autofocus when a 300mm f2.8 is attached as well as a superbly large and bright viewfinder. :)

I got an eos 5 to go with my 350D in January. I had to bid on about 10 before I managed to get one for less than £100.

Fantastic camera though, it has actually made me begrudge the amount I spent on my 350D in the first place.

The few reviews i found seem to suggest the EOS 5 is a good camera but Keeping think it would be better to get a newer body such EOS 30. I assume the newer bodies would auto focus faster and have better compatability with my Speedlite 430 EX. Any views?

Also no one has recomended what film to use. Does it make much difference? Otherwise will just go for some 400 ISO black and white from any make.

This is a post I wrote before regarding film.

If all you want is B&W, are you going to develop it or will a lab? If you are then they're all pretty good, Kodak tri-x, T-max, Ilford, Delta 400, hp5+, I think Fuji does a 400asa b&w too. If a lab will be doing the processing Ilford's XP2 is your best bet.

Out of my mates who still use film as their regular cameras I know people with 300vs, 30s, 33s and 5s.

The 5 is the best camera there regardless of age. It was a class above the 30 and it still is.
