Recomendations for New York

Oh forgot about bars!

When you go to Momofuku Ssam bar (and DO go to Ssam bar, it's probably the number 1 place to visit on any list, unless you're a veggie, or don't like pork...) the Booker & Dax bar there is run by Dave Arnold of Cooking Issues. He's a mixology genius and their cocktails are supposed to be incredible, plus not crazy expensive.

Would also recommend Virgil's was right by our hotel when we went in november also recommend Dallas bbq went to Carnegie deli was so overrated had a better and cheaper pastrami sandwich in a cafe in lower east side.

Barcadia was pretty cool. It's a bar up in Brooklyn with 1980's arcade machines all round the edge and Brooklyn beer on tap served in pint glasses. Much better on tap than in a bottle :D

In fact, most of the cool bars were in Brooklyn, not in NYC. You'll probably pass the Brooklyn Heights Wine Bar which was very chilled for a Saturday or Sunday afternoon glass.

Slighty off topic but was wondering which hotels you have all stayed in/would recommend?

Looking at going with the misses next year!

take your pic..theres plenty to suit every budget from small boutique to large multinational

I have stayed in the Westin Times Square, the W Times Square and hotel 41

no complaints about any of them...the corner room we had at the W had magnificent views looking north of times square

the westin suite we had had views down to the south and east..its amazing lying in bed with the curtains open and being like 40+ stories above ground level

hotel41 was just a small hotel, small rooms, but we had booked it as a last minute thing and served its purpose..had a great bar though that people came in to watch the sunday night football..very generous with their measures!

We are staying at Yotel. http://www.yotel.com/hotels/new-york-city

For us its the perfect combo of price and location. The rooms are very small, what they term 'cabins'. Not sure how ill feel about these but we don't plan on spending a lot of time there. Seems to get good review on tripadvisor if that means anything to you. I'll right a better review when we are back if anyone is interested.

There was a steak house close to being under the brooklyn bridge ny side that was really nice/didn't break the bank (forgotten the name now)

Also get a white castle for a cheap lunch one day, one of those fast food experiences you won't get anywhere else (crinkle cut chips...)

Lol I'm off to NY in April too, will keep on eye on this thread, I want to do some Man V Food challenges

Wolfgang's for steak (similar sort of price and food to somewhere Hawksmoor in London. Similar to Peter Luger's, but more convenient (a couple of locations on Manhattan and they take card payments).

Peking Duck House worth a look, went as part of a party of 4 and had one of the set menus which includes a whole duck with pancakes etc as well as a couple of entrées and we left very full and without parting with too much money. Service wasn't particularly fantastic though!

At the other end of the spectrum...

Shake Shack burgers are pretty good and sensibly priced and the milkshakes are good. Be prepared to queue and struggle to get a seat. Bit like an up market mcdonalds!

I visited Chipotle a couple of times when I just wanted something quick, predictable and cheap. Similar to Tortilla and the like in the UK. $10 dollars or so for a pretty tasty burrito and doesn't feel as bad as regular fast food (there are only so many burgers you can eat!)

People have mentioned Katz's Delia and Momofuku and i would add my vote to them.
Also Nobu is still worth going to, even though it is not quite as 'hot' as it was 10 years ago i thought the food was still awesome and its a very different setup to the London one.
The other half is on a work jolly in NYC at the moment and they always eat at some nice places when they go so i will see if i can add to the list over the next few days.

EDIT: You will generally find the quality of the independent cafes awesome for breakfast but just avoid the scrambled eggs in the USA; as a rule they are more like strips of overcooked omelet for some bizarre reason.
