I'm taking a trip to Asia, NZ and Aus in September and am looking for a decent backpack to use for everyday wandering around etc.

I've only got a D50 with kit lens but am really after something that i can fit all the other everyday junk in as well (drinks, coat, etc..). The crumpler bags look quite nice but i dont know how i'd get on with a shoulder bag for long periods. Also doesnt look like you can fit a lot else in them? I've seen a few backpacks that look good -- with the compartment for some camera gear at the bottom and the rest of the bag free for all your other junk.

I also think i'm either gonna have my camera out, or not. I'm not quick enough (yet) to get even try to get to my cam quickly for a quick shot opportunity so i'm not really worried about accessability at the moment.

Any recommendations? :)

I've got a Crumpler Formal Lounge which fits my 10D + battery grip and 10-20 or 24-70 on it with another lens in the same pouch. If need be I can put my 100-400 in the compartment above it. I can also carry my MacBook Pro in there. Plenty of room for a drink or two, some food too if I take the 100-400 out so it doesn't crush it :) Its a very comfy backpack that I carried nearly every day in Toronto.

Got a LowePro Orion Trekker II

It's got the Camera bit at the bottom and the rest is a normal backpack.

Could be bigger though. I can fill the top bit up quite easily. :(

Bottom bit is ok though. 5 sets of AA, 5 CF Cards, Canon A80, Fuji S9500, filters for both, additional zoom lens for the A80, memory card reader and other stuff.

I've got a Kata r-103

inside I can put

Canon 350D with grip
Canon 24-70
Canon 17-40
Canon 70-200
EF II x1.4
Various spare batteries , memory cards , filters and loads of other bits and bobs

There is even a compartment in the back for my laptop if need to take it with me .

It's a great bag :D

I was going to get one of them till I realised its only for my camera equipment. Just like the OP I decided I needed a bag for my camera, couple of lenses, laptop and daily stuff for wandering around Toronto.

Thanks for the advice guys. cyKey you have mail.

Remember i'm only looking for smallish camera compartment as all i have is my D50 and kit lens. I guess i better buy a spare battery and memory card before i go (or should i wait until i get to Hong Kong; our first stop? )

Take camera plus a normal amount of bits to your local independent photography shop.

They should let you try them out. Mine did.

To be fair I carry a lot of crap around with me...heyfever gunk, tissues, 3 phones, GPS, usb cables, small screwdriver/socket set *i'm a geek...* so the LowePro Orion Trekker II may be an ideal size for you.

The D50 with kit lens iirc isn't much bigger than a S9500 so it will fit nicely.

What you need is a Lowe Pro Rover

Our popular, two-compartment backpack has adjustable harness, CollarCut™ shoulder straps, sternum strap, waistbelt, and load-adjustment straps. Stow camera gear in the bottom compartment; outerwear and lunch in the top. Bungee cord web provides stability and additional storage; attachment loops take optional SlipLock™ accessories. Center divider folds away to create a single compartment — just remove the padded camera insert to use as a traditional backpack. Includes All Weather Cover™, pull-out tripod holder and side mesh pockets.

Ooh that looks nice. I know my local cam shop had Lowepro stuff so i'll see if i can have a look at one of those :)

I've just ordered a Tamrac Adventure 6, which is the same backpack style, but a bit smaller. They do bigger sizes too.

Can't tell you if its any good yet, but it looks like just the thing for travelling.

*huge bump*

I still havent decided on what bag to get but the Orion Trekker II does seem perfect. My only worry is that i read on one site (i've forgotton where  ) that it's not waterproof. I'm 99% sure it'll be raining a fair amount in the NZ winter so this would be problematic! Can anyone clear up wether or not it is waterproof? :)

It's annoying because my local shop only seemed to have bags that were the massive ones with the whole size devoted to camera equipment. So i'm looking online really :(
