Hi there,

Well I go away on the 22nd July and I would like to take a book or two.

I'm not a big reader. I have probably only read one book outside of school/university and that was The Da Vinci Code - which I loved.

I would LOVE to get in to reading properly as most of my friends read quite a lot and I would love to be the same. I was engrossed in the DC so something must be there.

Any recommendations would be welcomed :)

I'm into:

Sport
Espionage (BOURNE/Bond etc)
Fanstasy (LOTR etc)
Classics (Roman literature etc)

Well If you liked Da Vinci Code you could try Angels and Demons, same guy but a much better book imo. Other than that:

LOTR
The Hobbit
Sword of Shannara (not the best book but its the start of the series and it gets a lot better from then on)
Nightwatch (can't recommend this highly enough, start of an excellent series of books, far better than the films)

I don't understand how you can be into roman literature if you're not much of a reader?!

Anyway, you may enjoy:-

The People's Act of Love
Catch 22

Both very good, very different to each other though.

Name of the Wind - Pat Rothfuss, an epic book and incredibly long, 700 pages I think and it's his debut, one of the best books I have ever read.
Nightwatch - another very good series of books
The Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan, very good series, book four of twelve (I think) is about 1000 pages long by itself

Try the James Rollins books - I've only read Sandstorm and Map of Bones - both great imo.

Historical stuff mixed with high tech military stuff :)

Fun :)

I'd highly recommend the book 'Odd Thomas' by Dean Koontz.
I find the way that he writes is very easy to flow into and doesn't ever get bogged down in detail.

Fantastic book that will have you engrossed within the 1st chapter. The twists and turns throughout the book are excellent too.

I loved Da Vinci code but for me Odd Thomas tops it. I recommended it to my sister and it has now become her favourite book, she even cried for the 1st time whilst reading a book.

The Aeneid by Virgil.
The Iliad by Homer.

Both are epics and should keep you entertained for hours :)

They might very well be great but might they not be a bit dense for someone who doesn't read much? I don't know about The People's Act of Love but the rest aren't perhaps the easiest to follow, Catch 22 certainly isn't.

Terry Pratchett is usually quite an easy read and combines fantasy and comedy.
Douglas Adams - Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy is another easy read which is good fun.
Lance Armstrong - It's Not About The Bike is a good book and remarkable story, particularly if you like cycling at all.

I'm reading Sniper One at the moment - you'll find it for much cheapness at your local Tesco :)

It's a brilliant story and an easy enough read with the author being Sgt Dan Mills.

You could try the other 3 Dan Brown books, Deception Point and Angels and Demons are pretty much the same book as The Da Vinci Code but with different names.

His Dark Materials is also worth a read, although personally I wish I hadn't touched the 3rd book!

Agree it's a good book, the ending is fantasically sad. But the next two in the trilogy are, imo, disappointing. Especially seeing as Dean Koontz wrote 'Watchers', one of the best books I've ever read.

Because I did Classical Civilisations @ A-Level. We read The Persians and The Odyssey.

I started to read the Iliad but didn't get far.

Edit: I know of the other Dan Brown books, I started to read Angels and Demons but again just stopped. As I have said, it doesn't matter if they are hard to follow I shouldn't have a problem.

Edit: I also own a hard back book of The Hobbit lol :o
