Happy New Year all.

I’ve got a bit of a dilemma here in that I’ve currently got a C1 and with a new job and a baby arriving this year (if the boys work), I need a bigger car.

With my new job I get car allowance (£240ish after tax) so I hope not to spend more than £300 on the monthly price.

Ive had my C1 for less than 1 year and will be going to the dealership I got it from to see what they can do for me.

I’ve been looking at the cars and I’m not too blown away by any of them really so thought I’d ask here and see if anyone has one of the newer Citroen’s/Hyundai’s and get some owner reviews!

Thanks guys.

Of the recent stuff I've done in work, the chap who does my road tests really liked the Tucson and raved about the C3 Aircross.

A friend of mine has just got an i30 for a family wagon, it seems pretty decent for the money, reasonable amount of toys in it, not sure what it drives like but comfortable for a passenger!

The dealership only sells Citroen’s, Hyundai’s and DS.

The C1 is on a lease so staying there will save me a bit of money rather then paying to get out of the finance.

Don't discount that option out of hand though if it means getting a better car / deal elsewhere. Will likely depend on the exit conditions, but e.g. if you are on a 2 year lease I can't imagine it is THAT expensive on a C1. e.g. say it cost you £1000 to exit the lease but you saved £1500 by not being tied into using the same dealer. They will likely know they have you over a barrel so not be the most competitive when it comes to their upgrade offers.

By all means have a conversation to see what they can do but do some research into alternatives via online aggregators so that you have a point of reference to compare with rather than just whatever you can get there for under £300/month.

We had the previous generation i30 and an i40 Tourer as pool cars at work. They are white goods cars, but they were both well designed, comfortable, quiet and 50MPG+ economical. They also never went wrong. Both were nicer to use than the Insignia Tourer replacement.

i30 and i40 are pretty good cars, have liked all the versions I have driven (65/66 plate) Can't say the same for the DS3's/C4's I have driven, was a big fan of Citroen up to and including the Xantia, but they are just Peugeots in a posh frock these days.

I remember the days when people would put on a straight face and slowly back away if you told them you drive a Hyundai, they were spectacularly crap cars. Nowadays they're bringing the fight to ze chermans and in many cases spank them on the bottom with a lovely Korean paddle. Some of them area genuinely good cars.

Citroen needs to bring out another proper quirky French car again, like the C6, Pallas or even a Xantia with air ride.

I'm actually quite a fan of the Hyundai ionic hybrid, and they are quite competitive on lease

So I went to the dealership yesterday and Hyundai weren't able to offer me anything within my budget (£300pm).

They handed me over to Citroen and went through my options and I took a test drive in a DS4.

My C1 was in negative equity by £2.7k so they ended up quoting me about £359 per month but this was too expensive so I told them we'd think about it.

Later that day, I got a call from the Sales Manager and he told me what price (sensible) I'd be willing to pay and I said as £315 would be my limit and he agreed to sell me the car at that price.

So I'm now the owner of a DS4 2.0 BlueHDI Prestige (Auto) which is the highest spec.

My plan is to keep this for 2 years and then trade it in for something a bit bigger i.e. the DS5 or DS7.

My company car allowance is £270 so that car is only costing me £45 per month.

Overall I'm happy. It's not the exact car I wanted but with £2.7k in negative equity, my options were limited!
