I'm planning to buy a NAS next week but I'm really not sure which would be the best option.

Right now I'm considering this one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-022-NG&groupid=2833&catid=2843

I'm not sure whether I will be buying the bundle with 4 drives or buying the NAS separately and buying 2-3 drives for now with the possibility of adding to them in the future.

It will be used for backing up data from my PC and also act as a media centre.

Would this be a good choice or can I get something better around the same price (or less)?

I know a couple of people sue the Netgear styff.

I'll make the same recommendation I always do though:

Synology, QNAP or custom built microserver running your preferred NAS based OS.

This will be the first NAS I've ever bought, if going for the microserver option what would you recommend?

Would it be worth using an SSD in my NAS (once I've decided what NAS to get...)?

I could get a 128GB SSD fairly cheap from where I used to work but I'll only bother if there will be some benefit to using it.

I've been looking too.
I want a 4 bay one for sure, but don't know which. I quite like the look of the Asustor or the Qnap.
Really have no idea about them though

Absolutely not.

NAS a storage medium, not a high performance medium.

Your most reliable and £:GB option comes in HDD form. Use them, specifically - HDDs designed for NAS application (IE the WD REDs)

I've decided to go for a HP ProLiant N54L microserver instead with the intention of still using it for what I planned to use a NAS for. It is cheaper and can be upgraded in future if I feel the need to :).

Going to put 4x3TB WD Reds in with an SSD for the OS (can't hurt lol).

Keep mulling QNAP or Microserver.

iSCSI lun presentation is what I'm wanting to do, Storage wise it's pretty much
iTunes 200GB and will grow if I convert DVDs / purchase content
OneDrive account 15GB - docs
General storage
ISO store for VMware workstation / MS Hypervisor

Looking at a 4 bay NAS with to start 2 x 1TB mirrored and JBOD for the other slots. In time I'll source 4 x 2TB disks and look to RAID 6 or maybe 10. I'd source a HP ProCurve switch for LACP port channel for the NAS.
