Hi, could anyone recommend a web designer or developer that you or someone else has used that is known to be reputable and professional?

My basic requirements are;

Will possibly be flashed based
Modern and well designed
Will need to be secure as it's dealing with payments
Front end needs to be linked to a database that holds basic details
A Forum is required but I may be able to do this

Thanks.

If it's an e-commerce site buy a package. What you're suggesting will cost a lot of money to do properly. Unless you're prepared to spend you'll end up with a heap of junk, and you'll be forever dependant on them for expensive updates. And don't use flash, it's the devils work.

Even if it's based on a package a designer will make it look professional, doing it yourself won't.

What order volume are you looking at? If your expecting thousands of orders you should perhaps go bespoke, the integration with your customer services are worth it.

If your not really sure what you'll do get Actinic and pay one of the (many) companies who do templates for them a few quid for something nice.

Thanks.

It's not order volumes as such but it's a site that is going to require a remote gambling / lottery license so people will be paying for that service.

The database needs to be very secure though as it will contain financial information and i'm not sure how this will be possible as standard levels of encryptions probably wont cut it.

Just another question to add to my previous post - Will the hosting company be able to cater for a database or is that a separate entity? The data between the database and front end needs to be encrypted, will Versign provide this service?

Most hosting packages including SQL databases, but always check before you sign up because its an addition that some might not. With regards to to encryption im not sure, someone else will probably shine some light on that.

if you're storing financial imformation (and by that I take it you are going to store credit/debit card details) you are in for a fairly considerable amount of cost with PCI compliance - and, depending on transaction volume, mandatory audits by VISA or MC.

If you just need to do recurring billing, try and farm that bit out to a third party payment provider such as PayPoint.NET (the only one we've found that will allow you to do variable repeat transactions).

Hi, I'm currently with register1 and i'm not sure if they include mysql or not, i'll have a look tomorrow.

As for the financial information, it wont be peoples, it will be financial information relating to the site only (it's hard to explain) but it's sensitive in terms of data, although it shouldn't fall into PCI because card details and transactions won't be taking place on the site.

The SQL DB will only contain a names etc (such as registration info) other than the sensitive info, so will this need to be encrypted somehow? Are there SSL companies that offer insurance?

It's worth having a look on freelancers.net, see if you can pick up a designer there.

Also, speak to register1, they will be able to advise you on the db and security etc. They may be able to do a bespoke package.

Don't shy away from flash, if used correctly can give stunning results.
