I've installed a few Alexas and some Philips bulbs at my mum's, so she can turn the lounge and bedroom lights on/off with voice control.

She likes that but now wants to change one of the Philips bulbs for a daytime equivalent bulb to help when knitting etc of an evening.

I've failed to find one that has Alexa control built in so thought an Alexa controlled mains plug on the angle lamp that she wants the bulb in would do the trick.

Browsing Amazon they invariable all get a good chunk of 1* bad reviews... so am really looking for some personal recommendations.

I need it to be install-and-forget.

The Philips bulbs all talk to the Alexas directly and I want to avoid anything that complicates things by needing an app, if at all possible.

Personally I avoid any smart plugs that use a direct wifi connection to the hub and get ones that use a hub, thereby only using one IP address.

depends on the size and construction of your house. We have external walls internally due to an extension so trying t oget a hub to have reception all over the house doesnt work. Individual ones just connect to the mesh network then work fine.

TP Link Kass or Tapo plugs, they work great and i have just under a dozen around the house and now all use the Tapo app but also controllable via Alexa

I have some tp link kassa and a couple of innr one. The Innr ones link to a hue hub, the kassa ones are wifi. I use the all with home assistant but I think you can control them with alexa also. the kassa ones are EOL now and replaced with tapo I think

We also have interior solid walls in a large 4 bed and the smart plugs are ok but if anyone has your more unique situation then even the connection to your main Internet hub would be weak and need to be resolved with an extender. In that scenario I'd put in one 'wifi' smart plug in a room that had issues.
Of course if you were looking at a whole smart house solution then Wiser would be ideal as the smart plugs are also extenders for both the SRV's and themselves.
