Well, it's definately not a saloon, a coupe or a hatch, so what is it? AFAIK Wagon is just Subarus name for an estate (I guess from the US's Station Wagons?), just as Honda uses Aerodeck, Audi uses Avant, Alfa also uses Sportwagon etc.

High mileage V70 are within your price range... so are 156 sportwagons (though not the 24v 3.2 GTA sportwagon, that's way too expensive).

Fast estates are a laugh, there is something about 140mph estate going up the road loaded with kids / dogs and what have you that makes me think, that man wants a sports car but can't have one

Or just get a Legacy turbo and avoid the inflated insurance premiums that come with Impreza ownership

I love the way everyone shouts OFMG LOL T5 whenever somebody says 'Estate' but forgets the fact most of them are now well over 10 years old and look like... old bangers inside and out

The newer ones are nice, though.

some are, some aren't, there should be some V70's that are ok, 850's are a bit long in the tooth though.

If you want an old banger estate that used to be fast and could fit a dog in the back,how about a sierra XR4x4 estate.... good luck on finding one now though

Focus estate has more than enough room for one dog and can be had for excellent prices. The TD version is a bargain.

Nope but 10 year old Mk1 Mondeos cost 500 quid and nobody is suggesting them to somebody with a budget of 4 grand.

ok I didn't realise the 850 T5 looked like that, I think I'll scrub that one off the list, I'll check out the Subaru legacy though and a few other mentions in this thread, I think failing that I'll just get a hot hatch and the dog can sit on the front seat.

Hot hatch? 205 GTi and spend the rest on insurance

You can fit a dog in the back of virtually any hatchback if you remove the parcel shelf - we carted a Labrador around in various cars from a Escort XR3i to a Mondeo LX hatchback
