Recommend Cooler for 5800X3D

I initially used the Brocken v3 I already was using on the 3700 I updgraded from but as a large retailer reduced peerless assassin to £32 in their recent sale I decided to go for that given all the positive review. On Cinebench by the end of 10 mins with the Brocken CPU temps had reached 85C with CCD hitting 90.5 at max. Initial results from Peeless Assasin were disappointing - went to 90C very quickly ... but I'd had issues getting it installed as it didn't seem to fit well. I then realized that the Broken was using an Alpenfohn AM3->AM4 conversion kit I'd got with the Broken (which was originally designed for AM3) and I'd had need to use a mix and match between what the Brocken had used and thew new mounting kit to install the PA. When I realized this I managed to dig out the AM4 backplate from the motherboard that I hadn't been using. Removed the PA - could see from the thermal paste that it had not been in contact with one side of the package - reinstalled the mount with the correct backplate and the PA. Just run cinebench and its topping out at 75 now after 10 mins. So (if fitted correctly!) its doing 10-12C better than the Brocken (and 8C better in the L3). So looks like a good choice in the end!

Are you using both fans with the Assassin?

I got a CoolerMaster ML240 AIO when I upgraded to my 5800X3D, mostly just for looks. I've had a little niggling worry in the back of my head about the pump or something failing, and so I'm thinking of switching back to air cooling. The PA seems like very good value.

EDIT: Just to add, I've set the PBO to -30 in the mobo BIOS so I should be running a touch cooler anyway (hopefully!).

My experience with the PA and 5800X3D.

Ambient temp in my room was 27oC, so fairly warm.

I had Kombo Strike at 2 on my motherboard, so -20 offset on all cores.

On a Cinebench run, I peaked at around 82oC degrees. If I ran Prime 95 small FFT torture test (I find this utterly murders CPU's and takes it to absolutely extreme temps) then I'm literally at 89oC, so virtually hitting thermal limits.

If I use PBO Tuner and set all cores to -25 (my 5800X3D is not stable at -30), then its at around 86-87oC in Prime.

I ran the same test yesterday (-20 offset) when ambient temp was around 25oC and those Prime load temps were hovering around 85oC.

Previous cooler was an Alpenfohn Brocken 2 PCGH Edition Dual Fan (5 heat pipes) that I picked up from here for £27. When I ran the same tests back in December when ambient temps were 20-21 degrees with the -25 offset, Prime test was giving me 84 degrees. given that the Broken used 2x 140mm fans, even those at full speed were very quiet. The PA's 2x120mm fans at full speed are noticeably noisier.

So on reflection, the PA is better than my previous cooler but a bit noisier when pushing beyond 80oC (have profile in BIOS to ramp up above this). But those temps with Prime are extreme and I never see then in general usage and gaming, so its staying on my CPU. Installing it is also a doddle I find. The Brocken uses the two screws that you really have to push down to engage in the mount. The PA I found just need to lined up and very ittle pressure required.

Depends on what figure you define as cheap.

I'd be going for a Thermalright Pearless Assassin for £45 or did you have a lower budget in mind?
I have one and it's rated a lot lower tdp than say a Dark Rock Pro 4 which can be had elsewhere for around £70... I was going to get a X3D but chose a 5700X but would definitely change my PA120SE for a DRP4 if I upgraded, as those 5800X3D's get HOT even on a high tdp cooler, and you don't want want it thermal throttling.

I bought an AK620. Noctua a bit too much. Assassin would've been the next choice. It's incredibly annoying though as it hums when it revs up every 10 or so seconds. Tried flattening the fan curve in bios but still revs up every time I do the most basic of tasks.
Maybe return it for that price and get the BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4 for £70 elsewhere if you look? Proven to work and very quiet/efficient for what it is and not Noctua rip off prices yet rivals/beats the Noctua in pretty much every test!

The PA works perfectly fine with a 5800X3D at stock voltage, assuming you're not running Prime Small FFT workloads.

But I challenge any cooler to put out respectable temperatures with that test and a 5800X3D at stock voltage.

Does it? I have a PA120SE and was under the impression it was a lot lower tdp than the DRP4?
That's a bonus for the future upgrades then ;)
