Hello folks, wasnt 100% sure if this should go into ram or coolers, as there's elements of both in it, I'm considering upgrading to an i7 2600k in the next few months and have been looking around at a few different components, I must admit before hand that I'm choosing some parts because of decent performance but also because I like the look of it (no point ordering ugly parts lol ), reason I say this is because I'm going to get 2 sticks of corsair vengance ram - with the large heatsinks, and have seen that their are some compatibility issues with them and some large heatsinks.
I intend on doing some overclocking on the i7 so would like and efficient cooler, but also would prefer a it to be relatively quiet, not sure on water cooling and read the fan on the H100 for example can be quite load, seen the noctua as cooler for the i7, but it would have problems with the ram? (and I dont like the colour scheme lol)

I'm liking the look of the NZXT Havik 140, looks decent, ok performance but from the looks of it seems like it too will have issues with the ram heatsinks, can someone confirm/deny this? (if it helps I intend on using a maximus iv - so an EATX)

Additionally any recommendations are welcome and appreciated :).

Miss post - meant to go into overclocking and cooling - apologies.

I personally would buy low profile memory and get the Silver Arrow as the price to cooling ratio is second to none. I run my Silver Arrow fans at 25% (50% in summer) and even under load they very rarely kick in to 100% as they're only set to run at 100% when my temps reach 60 degrees which only happens during a prime run; small ffts (just). It's basically silent - idle and under load...

However, if you're set on the Vengeance you could orientate the Silver Arrow away from the memory- i.e. pull/pull - image below explains better:

There's also the Noctua coolers (D14 ideally) which should accomodate the Vengeance if you move the front fan up the face of the heatsink and has similar cooling capabilties as the Silver Arrow but at a premium price.

The Prolimatech Genesis Mega Performing CPU Cooler is a great cooler and can accomodate high profile memory but you have to buy the fans separately so it works out expensive compared to the above two.

It's similar in performance to the SA but the fans are an expensive extra which is where it falls down slightly in reviews as it becomes expensive in comparison. But the bonus for you is that it can tolerate high profile memory.

I had the same kind of issues as you, I went with the Water H100 and got 2 silent 120mm fans to replace the standard. Ended up puting the standard ones in the case and have them running at about 50%.

Last night clocked my i5 up to 4ghz and on the prime test temp maxed at 58c

I like it because it send the air straight out the case rather then is circulating around the case.

it is a lot more exspensive though.

Thanks for the responses, i dont liek the colour of the noctua fans lol, but those temps. are very impressive, and thanks for the pics, the pull/pull setup seems like a good config, it doesnt affect temperatures too much?

The Prolimatech Genesis seems like a good option except for the cost but its an unusual way off mounting the fans, opens up some more options.

Thanks for the video.

And sniper were the extra silent fans expensive and do they lessen the noise enough to warrent buying them?

I think I paid £12 per fan which is on the cheaper noiser side of the market for the super silent it's about £17-20 each.

For me it was worth it. I can run the new fans full speed and they produce the same noise as the stock on low. I'm sure better fans would be quieter still.

Dont forget if you drop the noise of the CPU cooler the noise of the he'd and GDP card will come through instead. Silent is hard quiet is achievable.

Im using the corsair 400r case, I'll get some basic noise leves for you tonight

What about a Coolermaster V8? I'm thinking of upgrading cooler and like the looks of this one, but wondering if it's got the performance to match? Really liked the Asus Silent Knight but have read disappointing results about it.

Noctua NH-D14 is slightly better than the Silver Arrow especially on higher overclocks.

Noctua NH-D14 vs Thermalright Silver Arrow:

xbits would disagree:

Performance wise they are pretty much on par, and At lower rpm on the fans the Thermalright Silver Arrow is clearly superior. Also the Silver Arrow is £20 cheaper, that alone make it a better choice, even IF Noctua NH-D14 was tiny bit better.

Dunno if the V8 would be compatible with Vengange, but come across the unusual V10, though it looks like it would deliver a few dbs - im going to read some reviews later.

Thx very much sniper, didnt have to go into so much trouble, the sound levels seem reasonable, I'm not looking for a wisper quite build as I'm aware thats hard to get and prob. expensive to get top notch, its just that im sure that while planing to get an i7 I dont want to end up with a turbine cooler lol.
Thermalright Silver Arrow/noctura - whats with the ugly colours on the cpu fans with these 2 lol.

Otherwise, if you like black, I would pick up a Thermalright True Black 120, with maybe an Akasa Apache Black fan, or something like that. TBH, you don't need a top cooler to overclock on SB. Your voltage will limit you before your temps. Unless of course you don't mind taking a risk at higher voltages.

I'm getting a mux-120, and will test it out up to 4.4-4.6GHz. Not going over 1.35V anyway, but ideally 1.3V.

Anymore thoughts on a Coolermaster V8? Tbh not the biggest fan of the Noctua styling, think the V8 looks cool :). Also on another question, when doing an overclock cooling seems to be the issue. So how come when Bulldozer was overclocked, they stopped trying to get more even though it was -200 C or something? Confused as to what the actual limitation is.

Yeh the Thermalright True Black 120 looks like a nice cooler (as does the wavey design of the havik 140 lol ), most of the cooler look like ther going to obstruct the 1st ram slot, if I decided to get a cpu cooler that was going to obstruct the 1st slot on the maximus iv motherboard, would their be any diffrence in preformance putting the ram modules into the 2nd and 4th slot?.

V8 looks like a beast, and I dont know the answer to the overclocked bulldozer :-/
