im sure there are plenty of these but heres my list of things i like

my musical scale goes from dance including a bit of trance, most popular light->medium rock, indie and a little bit of drum and bass.

my main genre at the moment though is indie or thereabouts.

last [EDIT i cant count :)] albums ive listened to and really enjoyed:

Wolf Parade,
Arcade Fire,
Mash up mix 2006,
Coldplay (X&Y),
Starsailor (half of silence is easy, and half of on the outside :P)
Bloc Party,
Kasabian
...and dare i admit it... James Blunt.

my main requisite is melody. and i have most well known bands so im looking for something maybe new and unheard of or a little bit quirky?

Hmmm... so many bands to choose really:

Jens Lekman
Sufjan Stevens
Band of Horses

All of their most recent albums, top stuff. :)

There are LOADS of bands around though which are all great so a bit of research is often the best way to discover them.

The Zutons - Tired Of Hanging Around

Brand new really nice and chilled only came out yesterday great melodys
and the best looking sax player in the world FACT

You ever checked out New Order fella? Kind of fits into your middle ground.
Try the album "Substance" or the two disc "singles"
You can pick em up dead cheap.

Creed

or if you like Coldplay, listen to Anathema, or Radiohead.
I like some of creed and i like radiohead. havent heard of anathema. will check them out...

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

Love that album, one of my favourites from last year, and still today.

The Subways - Young for Eternity is another one I really like.

Shed Seven - One Hand Clapping.

If, after five full listens you can't honestly say you love it, I'll reimburse you for the album myself.

This, The Kooks (Inside In, Inside Out) and We Are Scientists (With Love and Squalor) are currently top of my playlist :) The Rakes (Capture/Release) aren't bad either.

Editors-the back room is a cracking album

Lorraine - 'I feel it' very catchy debut single from this Norwegian band

MUSE. Showbiz is a bit soft, Origin of Symettry is nice and harsh but still well rounded, and Absolution is soft again.
