You get a lot of bang-for-your-buck with Yamaha (or at least you did when I last looked before Brexit and Covid etc) provided you go for one of their intermediate-upper tiers. Warwick basses are also worth checking out. I only muck around with bass, but my cheap Yamaha punches above its weight. My friends who are much more serious players have a high end Yamaha and Warwick and they are really good to play.
Just like electric guitars there are a variety of things to consider:
Pickup types (single coils, staggered coils, humbuckers/twin coils) - give different tone and the latter are more hum noise/interference resistant
Quality of the pickups and tone pots etc.
Woods - affect tone
Neck radius, profile and scale length i.e. fret spacing - affect comfort/playability depending on the handsize
After that it's workmanship, set-up, string types etc.
