What used to be a UK
...as title but because I am very much a beginner I'm at a loss as to where to start and what I would need. For studio work I would be interested in portraiture/kids & maybe dogs. I went in to a local photography shop and asked them the same question but they said they are unable to recommend anything because they are moving more towards printing?

you will need a background and some lights

very cheap backgrounds on the bay and lights depending on your budget

what kind of budget do you have?

Get a roll of white seamless, a backdrop stand, and some gaffer tape. Depending on what kind of look you want daylight may be all you need (certainly worked for Avedon and Penn). You can DIY a few V-flats and polyboards, one side white, the other side black. You'll be using those to bounce light with the white side and deepen shadows with the black side.

If you find you need some light, get a Yongnuo 560III or IV (or whatever the Godox equivalent is), a trigger, a light stand, and a softbox of some sort. I quite like the Photex Softlighter but it's hard to come by in the UK at the moment. Read the Strobist 101 guide to get to grips with the technical side of flash.

Unfortunately I don't have time for the DIY. The only flash unit I have is the Nissin I60A

You can just buy a pop-up reflector if that's the case. A 5-in-1 is very useful for a little fill.

Your flash should be enough, just buy a trigger set for it. A shoot through umbrella is a good starter light modifier too. Doesn't have to be an expensive Pocketwizard setup, a Yongnuo 603 set should work with your flash.

You can buy one studio head (lencarta) a softbox and stand.. one reflector and a cheap background and be up and running.

and then add to your kit as you get more money

Best thing you can do is get your flash off the camera for better lighting. So, with that in mind purchase yourself the Nissin Commander Air 1 ( for Fuji - or at least I'm assuming you are using a Fuji ! ) - this will allow you to control a single, or multiple flashes from the top of your camera wirelessly. It's a small piece of kit, but robust and works superbly.

I also have a Wex £20.00 voucher I can use. I'll look at the setup for the Air commander including some of the other items already suggested. Thank you.
