I'm going to need a dedicated server so that I can host a website..

Can anyone recommend me a host which isn't 1000000 a month :)

I dont need a huge amount of space... 1-2gb will do.

TIA.

Why do you need a dedicated server? It is very expensive compared to virtual private machine or shared web hosting for not a lot of gain when it is just a website. Plus you have to look after it yourself.

because the site is running into performance related issues which seem to be caused by the current hosting.

are you sure that the current hosting provider is the issue? would it be possible to change things on your site to improve things? i.e. check all your images and make sure they arent html resized and manually resize them yourself

if there isnt anything that can be done on your end and you need to switch, what other requirements do you need? do you need an application server?

I'd recommend 2host.co.uk and for the features you are looking for I'd recommend one of there VDS packages. 100% sure the guy that runs 2host is on these forums.

Build your own server if you only need 1-2gb? Probably much less costly in the long run... and you have ultimate control.

We use Rackspace - not cheap at £350 a month, but awesome managed service and reliability.

Hosting is a funny old game - 99% of the time its basically money for nothing - its how much you value that 1% when things go wrong. We had a couple of occasions this year when our previous, cheaper server went down, and when you're sat there trying to get hold of the company whilst more and more of your clients ring you up complaining, suddenly the cost seems worth it!

A quick google for Rackspace will show you that they're no better than most other half decent hosting companies in terms of outages. But they do have great marketing.

Poundhost are cheap and cheerful - around £50-£60 a month, or for more fanatical support we've found CoreIX to be good (100% uptime SLA) but they start at around £150-180 a month.

We just got a poundhost server at work and have had no problems so far. The 100Mbit connection is ever so slightly faster than the 256kb one the website is currently sitting on :o.

We have a couple just for budget clients and doing a speedtest get around 40-50mbit sustained.

Any server can go down. It's about the communication and customer service you get when, not if, it happenends.

I completely forgot to do a speed test actually. I got 9.5Mb/s downloading Crystal Reports so I know it can at least get nice and high.

edit: I'm jealous of the ping. 1ms to Jolt!

Definitely, but you'll find that whilst most managed service providers are equally capable, Rackspace have the best marketing. :)

Possibly, although I bought from them via recommendation, from a friend that works in another agency who had nothing but great things to say about them.

I'm not saying that there arent other providers offerring the same level for less, just that I'm very happy with them - makes me relax more when I'm on holiday!
