Hi,

Having finally left the 1990's and ditched my Pentium 3, i've just bought a new laptop. I haven't really kept up with the gaming scene for a few years now having been to uni etc etc. But now that I've got the laptop I wouldn't playing a game or two again.

Being a fan of the Command & Conquer Series back in the day, I wondered what was now the hottest RTS to be played these days along a similar line to C&C that isn't a total turkey.

Any recommendations ?

I would thoroughly recommend:
Supreme commander
Company of Heroes
Dawn of War

There is a C&C3, but I really didnt get on with it, it is not tactical enough for me.

I have heard very good things about Sins of a Solar Empire so much so, that I meight get it meself), but thats set in space, so you'll be controlling space fleets and whatnot. As for other RTS's, Warhammer 40K Dawn of War is a good 'un, along with its expansion packs.

Aint really played a lot of RTS's tbh

Dawn of War is excellent, have only played the first one but had to play it to completion. Brilliant game with an alright story and nice graphics.

company of heroes simply the best game ever made in my vast experience.

I'm liking the sound of this, is Company of heroes: Opposing front the sequel, or is it an expansion pack ?

Seems the 'original' Company of heroes is rated better than Opposing Front.

U can get the gold edition of coh (with of) for like £20 in some places... very good buy, coh is easily still worth that on its own

The new armies in of did change the game a lot when is was first released, there was a lot of jusified worries that they people at relic were ditching the old gametype in favour of an easier way of playing (spam a single unit and blob rush ** opponent). But they have been working hard with their patches and the new patch 2.4 should be out in a couple of weeks and will hopefully go a long way to getting their reputation back to where it should be

i agree coh is definitely the best rts ever

The problem I had with Dawn of War was every single mission was almost exactly the same. You start off with not very much, then 20 minutes later you had an epic army of soldiers and armour and you just flattened the place.

I don't know if the same is true of the expansions though.

ok, i went and bought company of heroes after work, but am starting to think my laptop probably isn't upto it. Looking at my specs below, should I not bother as apparenlty now Game dont taken returns after opening :/ I'm not looking for mega high res or all the candy.

Vostro 1500

Core 2 Duo 1.4 (Santa Rosa based, supposed to be better for games im told)
2GB Ram
Geforce 8400GS 128MB
Vista

I used to run CoH on a 6600GT and it was still playable, using 1280x1024 res. and medium(ish) settings (no AA I *think*), I'm sure the 8400GS is faster?
