Hi there,

I've not been on for a while, just nosed in thinking of getting a 1tb Samsung drive to store music on, and just noticed they are cheaper, and that F3's are out too?

I am after a lot of storage I guess as it's probably going to be stored as WAV, but would like decent performance that is reliable and quiet.

So what drive is recomended for under £80? And should I go for 1.5tb instead of 1tb?

Will be used with either XP Pro 32bit or Win 7 64bit in the old system in my signature.

Cheers,
Steve

If it's just for storage then go for an F2, and for the extra tenner you might as well get 1.5TB. :)

Is this music you're making or your music collection? If it's the latter then use FLAC.

Yes it's for storing albums on, not really paid much attention to Flac, been there and did it all before with Eac and such, these days I prefer the simplicity of Windows Media or I-Tunes for ripping uncompressed.

The Samsing 1.5tb F2 seems decent, is that three 500gb platters? How does it's performance compare to the £88 7200rpm Seagate or Western Digital 1.5tb offerings?

Or is the 1tb F3 a much better all rounder?

The F3 is faster, but also noisier. Unless read speed is important, stick with the F2.

The F2 comparable to the seagate, slower than the WD blue/black and about the same as the WD green

It's faster than the WD Green, not sure about the Seagate but their performance is always poor so even though it's 5900rpm I'd expect the F2 to be quicker. But they'll all be about the same and for storage a better option than an F3.
