Recommend Me A Hard Drive

I'm looking for a 500Gb external harddrive. I don't know much about this sort of thing. Would having the external slow down the performance of my PC? I'd like a harddrive that is reasonably quiet with fast access and of course good value for money.

Any recommendations?

What you need depends on how it's going to be attached.
If you have to use USB the speed of the drive hardly matters as it'll be faster than USB or USB2. Something like http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-122-WD&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=911 looks like a good choice.

If your computer has an eSATA port then you can use a SATA2 drive which will be at least as fast as your internal drive. There's a recent thread here about which is the best 500GB SATA drive athough the WD drive above still looks like a good choice.

Or you could buy the Icy Box External Enclosure IB-360AStUS SATA + USB Combo - Black/LED and put a Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB 5000AAKS into it, this will give you the option of being able to connect via USB2 or eSATA.

Or buy the eSata version of the Western Digital MyBook and pay less?

Which is exactly the drive I suggested earlier.....
