as per title really, would like something like the nikon 17-55 f2.8 but cant afford the £1k price bracket

have looked at the sigma 24-70 which is around the £500 mark but have heard it doesnt have any dust or weather sealing.

Thanks Ali

Look at one of the tamron or sigma 17/18-50mm f2.8 lenses. If you go for the tamron version try before you buy, they have horrendous quality control.

Otherwise look for the Nikon 17-55mm second hand perhaps?

I would avoid the sigma 24-70mm, ugly rendering.
Also, In general on a crop pay the 17-55 rnage works much better. The 24-70 lenses are OK as portrait lenses for not everyday lenses.

Simple, as already mentioned, get the 17-55 used. They usually go for £500-550 and are a lot better than the alternative (if you don't mind the weight).

The random 17-50 is supposed to be pretty sharp but its really poorly made IMO, on the other hand that means its also light and small. The sigma 24-70 is pretty poor and rather huge (the non HSM in talking about). The Nikon 17-55 is a heavy lump, but weatherproof and built of metal with good IQ.

The other thing with a second hand Nikon 17-55mm is that you can buy it, use it for 2 years and sell it on for much the same price. If you pick up a bargain you might even look to profit. In that sense it is much cheaper overall than buying a cheap lens new, then deciding to upgrade in the future as 3rd party lenses depreciate much faster.

thanks guys have been looking around for the 17-55 and the reviews seem pretty amazing. dont mind heavy! mind price!

They are pretty good value for money these days second hand, plenty of people moved to full frame ad so have resold their old lens.

Some of the advantage of the Nikon 17-55 over the others:
weather proofing
build quality
By far the fastest and most accurate focusing speed
77mm filter thread (Sigma 24-70 is 82mm or something horrible)
This lens has great QC, while most of the 3d part lenses are highly variable. I tried 3 of the Tamrons and gave up, all useless paperweights.
Wonderful Bokeh

On the downside it doesn't have VR and it is not very light, but of couse much lighter than say a 70-200mm f/2.8.

i think i might hire one first before jumping straight in, but the more i read about it the more i like it

Another option is the Sigma 17-70, which I think has an OS version. A lot of people like that a lot too.
