I have a canon digital rebel xti with standard canon kit lens, however i want a wide angle but i cannot afford expensive prices :(. Can anyone recommend any good lenses for the price?

Cheers

If he wants a wideangle, when he has the kit lens (18-55), a 28 won't help him out.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think you'll have to be looking for a second hand bargain to go wideangle for that sort of money.

What you might consider is panoramas; given they effectively boost IQ (in terms of sharpness and CA) they can be a great way to get stunning images out of a cheaper setup, and it means you get wider effective fields of view :)

Yeh i've done pano's before but i hate the kit lens the quality is poor and not very clear, it's way below my sigma(?) 100-300mm macro D. Most likely it's the glass, Beyond F8 and the sharpness drops off

Thanks :D

Is your kit lens the one without IS (Image Stabilisation)?

If so, you could trade it in for the IS version which is a great starter lens imo. I've seen them around £45-£50 recently in the TP market place.

I had the one without but it broke, got the one with IS and it's poor. The amount of high pass sharpen i have to add to make it a clear picture is annoying :(

That's a shame, you might have a bad copy.

There's not many options though for £150. You might be able to get one of the following around this price but no idea how they perform in relation to the IS kit lens.

Sigma 17-70
Sigma 18-50
Tamron 18-200

I would suggest borrowing another IS kit lens off someone you know, failing that you could try testing one in a camera shop (with your camera).
Last options would be to sell your current lens and get another copy.

Sorry to bump this again, but it's my birthday soon and I've been given the choice of a lens aslong as it's upto £200 :D. Looks like i might go for the Sigma’s 18-50mm F2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM

For £180, I recently got myself a second hand Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD IF from the Talk Photography classifieds.

It's 17mm end seems a good bit wider than the 18mm on the Canon 18-55 I had previously. It's also a faster lens at every focal length, as well as being MUCH sharper. The difference blew me away.

Quote of a review that compares the Tamron to the Sigma you mentioned (also includes the Canon 17-55, but as thats £600+ second hand I'll ignore that :))

The differences? The Sigma is less resistant to flare. The Sigma shows more CA. The Tamron is noticeably wider (17mm vs. 18mm - and even wider than the Canon with the same 17mm designation). The Tamron focuses faster, the Sigma focuses more quietly. The Tamron focuses much more accurately - My keeper rate is far higher with the Tamron. My Sigma has a weak left side - For sharpness, the Tamron beats the Sigma easily on the left side, but the Sigma is slightly better on the right. The Sigma rings rotate the Canon direction, the Tamron rings rotate the opposite direction. The Sigma is less expensive (but not by much). The Sigma's requires its lens hood to be removed to install/remove the lens cap - this is a pain - Plan to buy the Tamron cap if you purchase the Sigma lens.

Second hand :)
As I said earlier, I got a mint condition one off the TP forum classified section for £180.

Are there any for sale currently?

My bday is at the end of the month and I need a certain amount of posts to get to the classified section
