I had a Senn PC151 headset and the mic was good.

I bought a Senn HD 555 set last week and a Zalman clip on mic, now my clan mates are complaining that I don't sound as good, they said it sounds like I'm "in a room" I said where did I sound like I was before? They said it sounded like I was next to them.

Is the Zalman mic rubbish? Is it echo in my room? Is there a better sort of mic I can get that will sound better? I almost went for a desktop mic but thought the clip on would be more tidy and out of the way.

So what mic would you recommend?

Thanks

Id be interested in this too :E

I also use a Sennheiser headset atm :/ quite fancy better headphones but are put off by the lack of a decent mic :\ Cant seem to find a decent one

Wear the PC151s round your neck and use the mike anyway. I do this with my medusas, while using other headphones.

Please note: this will make you look like a prat, but hey - who's watching? ...

I did that to start with but it was annoying.

There must be a better mic out there, Senn do some cool looking ones that go round your neck but also over your ears and as I wear glasses I don't think it would work, no idea what they cost either.

I use a logitech USB mic and it does the job. sits on the desk mind, its not a clip on jobbie. Quality sound though.

I've paired an el cheapo konig mic off the 'bay with Senn HD555s, was no more than a couple of quid and have stuck it to the rear of my monitor. Sound is great and has been best bang for buck for me recently!

Seems like my mic isn't the problem as I tried my old headset round my neck and they still moaned. Maybe my Xfi drivers are a bit wobbly. God knows.

Try messing with the volume and sensitivity settings of your mike, plus placement. Lower volume and closer to your mouth may work better.

I have the mic volume set to 100 else people complain that they can't hear me. The mic is clipped onto the headphone cable pretty high up. I dunno what I have done, could it be because my headphones are open style?

Is there a mic boost or gain option in your soundcard drivers? If so, turn it on (assuming it isn't already) then adjust volume and sensitivity either drivers or the communication software / game.

Don't have a Creative Card insalled at the moment so copied and edited this from another forum:

If you go into Vista's control panel, Hardware and Sound, Sound, Recording tab, right click the Microphone device (or whatever device you are using) and select properties. Under the Custom tab Microphone Boost should be there

Just been through the process with my Xonar and it's there, despite having separate control software.

Ah yea there is a +20db boost option but I tried that before and people said they could hear me good (on old mic) but I could also hear myself coming back through my headphones and was really annoying. I may try it again but with mic level at 50 or something to see how it is.

edit - yea with the boost on I can even hear my own mouse clicks.

Volume down and turn off mic monitoring - that way you won't hear yourself at all.

Edit: changing sensitivity in your game or communication software will stop noise coming through when you're not speaking. That's assuming you're not using a push to talk system.

I'm using Team speak and I use push to talk, I'm gonna buy a Plantronics .Audio 300 Advanced Noise-Cancelling Microphone. Think that will do it? I tried my old headset round my neck and they said it was much better.
