Budget is £100, I like recommendations as I have never gone SATA so not really got much experience in the matter, thanks for any help

size?
can you go sata 2?
anything from samsung, hitachi. seagate, wd or maxtor in your budget will suit...

samsungs are usually the quietest.
hitachi the fastest.
seagate the longest (5yr) warrenty.

i think thats about right.

That should not be a problem, as SATA II is supposed to be backwards compatible.

No problem with mine on a SATA I mobo.

Good Good because when I upgrade to PCI-E I did not want to be falking out another 100 + for yet another hard drive ;)

Thanks, IF I may ask what Hard Drive do you have ?

I have a Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 NCQ 250GB SATA-II 8MB Cache, attached to an Asus P4C800 motherboard, ie only supports SATA I, on an Intel ICH5R con, but it runs very well indeed and has already been said SATA II is backward compatable.

In HD Tach I get Average read of 56MB/s + ;)

Western Digital 3200 series if it is a secondary data drive. Get the SD (RE) one if you want a 5 years warranty.

In any case, they perform well and are one of the best in terms of £/GB.

Just don't touch Maxtor and you will be ok.

I think speed difference between drives is negligible in day to day use (wow, this one is 0.5 seconds faster woot! etc). I'd go for longest warranty - shows they have faith in their product.

Buying a Maxtor is like shagging a minger, yeah its got all the sockets but you regret it the day after.

Yeah we've all been there I guess - 10 pints, go to bed with Naomi Campbell, wake up with Don King etc :)

Back on the Maxtors - I never had bother before their Diamondmax series. Still got old ones from 10+years ago that chug along nicely.

Hitachi Deskstars - reliability sorted now? I still have a paperweight/screeching 'Death' (Desk)star hard drive just in case we get burgled so I can lob it at someone - for that reason alone I'd not buy Hitachi/IBM again.

As this is a SATA thread, I stay clear of Maxtor, especially the DMax series, but I do have 2 36Gb Maxtor Atlas SCSI drives. These I can not fault. Their sound is unique, their speed is unmatched and their price is day light robbery.
In my opinion its the fastest XP64 loader.

Back to SATA think spinpoint....
