Can you guys recommend an external hard drive, minimum 250 gigs, firewire or USB2, to be used mainly for the storage and playback of media. I'll need to password protect certain files/folders; as far as I know this is pretty standard...?

Any advice on reliable brands would be great.

Instead of buying it in one package you should buy the drive and enclosure separately. Its generally cheaper and you get to choose what drive goes in [and you can swap and change].

So, I would recommend the IcyBox enclosure and an Hitachi Deskstar 250GB for performance or a Samsung Spinpoint if you want quiet.

actaully some of the external hard drives that are pre-built are cheaper than buying seperates and making an external. take the WD 250gb at £77.
