Recommend me an osteopath in Aberdeen

Because it works. It has worked for me whenever I've needed it.
that doesn't mean much, perhaps you had one which actually knew what he was on about, doesn't mean the next one will. or placebo etc.

but still why, when there's a proper profession with training for it.

that is the problem - anecdotes and the placebo effect

(the evidence is pretty weak for lower back pain AFAIK)
There's no evidence at all. There's only evidence it causes no harm. The belief is that it's either a placebo effect or the pain would just go away on its own anyways. As I pointed out even the UK council that deals with osteopathy can't explain how it should theoretically work.

The NHS also run homeopathic hospitals... it doesn't mean that homeopathy actually works or does anything but rather the NHS seemingly doesn't mind wasting a relatively small portion of their funds on nonsense if there is demand for it from patients

It angers me so much to see that with the NHS in the state it is that they are wasting money like this. They might as well be dumping wheelbarrows of taxpayers money into a bonfire.

thankfully its slowly coming to an end thanks to pressure groups, they have a victory or two and are now going after others.

its no wonder nhs comes top in patient opinion but badly in actual care, in surveys. I know which one I would rather have.

I have a friend who is an osteopath and when he treated my back it was much the same as the sports/physio therapists I'd seen before.

He did however do the joint cracking and acupuncture which was different (and seemingly effective), but the massage and prescribed exercises were very, very similar.

My friend is very much in to exercise, performance, function etc and reads across these areas so I suppose it would depend on what interests the practitioner.
