Hi all,

Looking at a new build. Current plan is a 7800X3D on an Asus X650E-F but I'm at a loss with memory.

I'm new to DDR5 and the AM5 platform. I've generally stuck with G.Skill for my recent DDR4 builds and would like to continue this as a brand I trust so looking at their Trident Z5 lines.

I'm at a total loss with what speeds and timings would be best though. Looking for 32GB (so 2 x 16GB kit). Don't mind paying a bit more for decent stuff but not stupid money. Just don't know where the "sweet spot" is.

Thanks.

Edited as linked the wrong ram, 6000mhz cl30 is the 'sweet spot'

I was actually leaning towards this stuff:

Most sites seem to suggest 6000 is the sweet spot speed-wise with the lowest latency you can get.

6400mhz is the new sweet spot for Ryzen 7000 series in the newer bioses, I actually brought a 7800mhz kit XMP G.skill Trident Z5, it wasn't much more expensive than a CL30 kit of 6000mhz, especially with DDR5 being cheap at the moment, its supposed to be going up again in price soon, so now is the right time to buy, it was Hynix A die which is the best in the DDR5 range, it overclocks to 8000mhz with ease, but also down clocks easily too, I'm running it at 6400mhz CL28, GDM Disabled at 1T with very tight sub timings, I've seen people running it at CL26, I'm just waiting now for some iceman heatspreaders to arrive for it so I can push it even harder.

Why only G.Skill?

All the memory brands use the same memory chips so the only thing that changes is the use of RGB, the heat sink and the price.

G.Skill does make good RAM but it’s not the only brand out there that does.

TeamGroup makes good Hynix RAM that’s cheap for example and some of the Corsair Dominator Platinum kits are expensive and rubbish.

Watch this for a complete buying guide to DDR5 RAM.

it’s from halfway through the year but the points about timings and speeds are still valid, the only thing that has changed is the pricing so you can weigh up that with some googling

Thanks for the link will have a watch.

I know there are plenty of other brands which are just as good as G.Skill, I just tend to stick with them as I like their design as much as anything.

I used to use Corsair almost exclusively back in the DDR3 days (got a drawer full of the damn stuff) but have gone off them in recent years.

Fair, just make sure that the memory chips that the ram you buy are decent quality rather than going on looks alone
