I've been out of PC gaming for some time, but have just built myself a new gaming rig for my living room from second hand parts and now I'm looking for some games to play. I did have an XBox 360 for a while, so I've not been completely out of the loop, but I do feel like I've probably missed quite a bit.

So... what can people recommend from the past 10 years? I generally play FPS games, but I like action/adventure and puzzle games as well, and I've played some RTS and sim games in the past.

The specs of the PC I've got are as follows:

Core i5 4590
4GB RAM (will be upgraded to 8GB in the near future)
GTX 970

I'll be playing on a 1080p TV from across the room, so I think the hardware should be up to the job for most games, particularly older stuff. I've got a 360 controller and a Steam controller, and if I really need a keyboard and mouse for something then I can stream to my Mac in the other room.

Recommendations please! Thanks!

As you like FPS games, the Metro games and Crysis games might be a good place to start. Wolfenstein The New Order too.

I remember trying the Crysis demo just as I was getting out of PC gaming, and it ran terribly, and everywhere you looked it was "Yeah, but will it run Crysis." It would probably be quite fitting to go back to it now :D

Remastered editions of the first two Bioshock games will be out in a few days - you could do a lot worse than starting with them.

To scratch the adventure/puzzle itch you've got:
First person puzzles like Talos Principle
Point and click adventures like the Deponia series
"Walking" adventures like Dreamfall chapters
arcade things like the Lego series of games (indiana jones, star wars, batman, harry potter)

GTA V is a lot of fun and there is so much to do, with new content added often. A controller is great for it, more immersive and comfortable, and arguably easier for driving, flying choppers etc. You do have a handicap with controller v keyboard/mouse in PvP in freeroam (in Free Aim sessions. You can choose Auto Aim if that's your thing) but it's not so bad except against the best. You can call yourself "TheSilentOne" so nobody expects you to use keyboard to type. :D

Your hardware is ideal for playing at 1080p, when you add that extra RAM.

Crysis and Crysis warhead were fun games, don't expect game of the year from them but they are enjoyable, especially warhead.

My number one piece of advice would be under no circumastance pay more than £5 per game. There have been so may great games released over the past few years that there is really no need to... My list of titles to explore would be as follows:

Civ 5 complete - Shoddy back on launch but great with both expansions + DLC, a real bargain.
Batman Arkam Asylum (+ sequels) - Arguably Arkam Asylum is the best one though
Mad Max - You simply cannot go wrong for £3.75
Shadow of Mordor - See above a AAA action game available for peanuts
Dishonoured - With expansions this is one of the more unique FPS over the past 4 years
Alan Wake - A personal favourite, Stephen King + FPS goodness. Great but cliche story
XCOM - Get the first with the expansion pack (enemy within)
Oblivion - I'm not a fan but was a massive game at the time and loads of content.
Mafia 2 - Sandbox game - the sandbox. Missing something but worth a play through
Portal 2 - I take it you've played Portal 1? Bigger, better
Sleeping Dogs - Just play it and love it
South Park Stick of Truth - Only avoid if you hate South Park
Warkhammer 40k space marine - Some people think it is average - I adored the combat + story
Mass Effect Trilogy - Hopefully you have heard about this?
Alien Isolation - I never thought a game would do the franchise the justice it deserves

I must insist that you play the telltale series the walking dead. At the very least season 1. Just an excellent game. Wolf among us is another of theirs that is fantastic.

There are already some great recommendations here, but a beautiful puzzle game is Brothers: a tale of two sons. Not particularly challenging in terms of puzzles, but such a great looking game with a touching story.

Talos principle as mentioned is a more challenging puzzle game and will leave you filled with existential angst. Got a bit bored halfway through myself, but some of the puzzles are fiendishly difficult.

Both Limbo and its spiritual successor Inside are also very atmospheric puzzle platformers with quite sinister overtones. Limbo can be had cheaply but Inside is fairly new so maybe not.

Witcher 3: just play it. Redefined the RTS genre imo with a massive world that somehow never feels stale no matter what you're doing. Just amazing. DLC is great too.

FPS wise there are some good ones but they have stagnated a bit lately. The battlefield series is still great, especially if you only played it on console (64 player maps!) , but avoid battlefront unless you want a pretty game with no depth.

For RTS, battlefleet gothic is my current fav. Ashes of the singularity is very good, but the player base is just so small that MP isn't very good. SP is good if you liked the old supreme commander games and like playing bots. Grey goo is another similar game that was underrated imo.

Another vote for mad max for some ridiculous fun, although it started to feel a bit samey after about halfway through.

Oh yeah: rocket league. Get it. Such a simple game but there doesn't seem to be a skill cap on it. You can always get better at it which has given it great longevity for me. Great game to play with mates and short matches make it great to fit around busy family life.
