Recommend me some good war books (non-fiction, modern)

A book i can highly reccomend is. Marine sniper by Charles henderson. Tells the story of usmc scout sniper Carlos hathcock during the vietnam war. This guy held the record for the longest confirmed sniper kill (2500 yards) until the recent afghan conflict. Bit short but a fascinaing book.

War by Sebastian Junger - about American troops deplyed in Afghanistan

I read an exert in one of the sunday papers, nicely written and very powerful. I may get around to reading it soon. I think there is a documentary by the same journalistic team and their camera man called Restrepo coming out soon too.

Thanks so much for all your ideas guys!!

I have whittled it all down to 10 books now.

Sniper One
Close Quarter Battle
Severn Troop
GCHQ
Phoenix Squadron
Eight Lives Down
Sea Harrier over the Falklands
Joint Force Harrier
Apache Dawn
Vulcan 607

Cheers again guys, look forward to some good reading!!

Some very good choices in there and also a couple of ones i have missed out. Having the same reading criteria as yourself, i think i shall be spending some money on the missing ones in my collection!

If you can find it "A mouth full of rocks" is an amazing read about the French foreign legion.

Sniper One is ace

Any one read "Operation Certain Death"? In 1999, a guerrilla gang captured a patrol of Royal Irish Rangers training government troops in Sierra Leone. In a daringly brilliant and bloody operation, the SAS rescued them from a heavily fortified jungle hideaway. Really good book.

Apache by Ed Macy - Best Apache book imo

The Boys from Baghdad: From the Foreign Legion to the Killing Fields of Iraq - private mil book, pretty good.

Seven Troop is good

I like anything by Chris Ryan

Last Round: The Red Caps, the Paras and the Battle of Majar quite a good read

there';s the generation kill books (one by the journalist and one by the captain)

but they're American.

I absolutely love this book

"Described as Blackhawk Down meets Ghost Soldiers this book chronicles the story of the single most daring Special Forces operation since World War Two - Operation Barras; the attempted rescue by the SAS of the British Forces who were being held captive by the guerrilla gang the West Side Boys in the Sierra Leone jungle. The West Side Boys were a strange-looking bunch. Wearing pink shades, shower caps, fluorescent wigs and voodoo charms they believed made them invulnerable to bullets - an impression re-enforced by ganja, heroine, crack cocaine and gallons of sweet palm wine. They terrified the local inhabitants by dressing up in monkey skins and abducting children for rape, torture and mutilation. In 1999 a 12 man patrol of Royal Irish Rangers, who were training govt troops in Sierra Leone, were captured and held hostage by the West Side Boys. They were held prisoner in a fortified jungle hideaway, with severed heads decorating the palisades and defended by some 400 heavily armed soldiers. Operation Barras, the mission to rescue them was a combined force of 100 paras, 12 members of the Special Boat Squadron, helicopters from the Navy and RAF an, spearheading the operation, 40-strong D squadron of the SAS. Against amazing odds the hostages were rescued - over 150 of the enemy were killed. Against All Odds is a story of all out war. No hostages taken. Blood-letting on a vast scale inflicted on a very blood-thirsty enemy.. "

Oh, and another +1 for Sniper One
