Rap- Gym Class Heroes, Jedi Mind Tricks, The Roots, Sage Francis.

Rock etc.- Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, The Shins, Elliott Smith, Hot Hot Heat.

Thanks

A few randoms i'm starting to get into;

Metric
The Postal Service
Death Cab For Cutie
Rilo Kiley
Quantic
The Dining Rooms
The Detroit Cobras
Dustin Kensrue
Nostalgia 77

For rap/hip-hop check out Swollen Members. There newest album Black Magic is very good imho.

You should also check out Ben Folds, Billy Talent, The Blood Arm and Cansei De Ser Sexy.

Indeed, also check out some of their older material, one track in particular i never grow tired of is "Deep End".

For some reason I've been listening to a lot of The Police and Cat Stevens recently. Also check out Audioslave - Revelations.

The new Kings of Leon album is quite good.

That's quite debatable. I for one dislike it. It sounds like one track, with the best "part" being Black Thumbnail.

Perhaps it'll grow on me though.

Check out early Pharcyde, Pete Rock (collaborations with CL Smooth especially), early Common, Nas, Gang Starr and the first couple of Redman albums.

Definitely debatable, Black Thumbnail doesn't come in my top 5 tracks (its poor tbh), I think it's a fantastic album though.

What a pleasant image.

Had a listen to their album on iTunes and I quite like it. Why so unpopular though?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swollen_Members

2003 brought Heavy, again released to critical acclaim and good sales, though many fans felt that Swollen Members had removed many elements of the style which had been so rewarding in the past.
In 2006 Swollen Members released their fifth full album, Black Magic. It is understood that Mad Child and Prevail made an attempt to return to their previously critically acclaimed style and method. Their previous album Heavy was seen by the band as a disappointment, and isn't listed on their official site discography.

Maybe the reason why

I'm also quite liking the newest (2005) Herbaliser album, Take London. It's growing on me.

I assume you Have Modest Mouse's new album then

I would suggest

Cold War Kids and Tapes 'n' Tapes (both similar style to Modest Mouse)
The Decemberists (another part of the Portland scene along with the Shins and MM)
Laura Veirs (especially if you like the Rilo Kiley/Metric suggestions above - which I would second btw)
