Can anyone recommend my some network/wireless software that will enable me to see stats and exaclty what is going on who is connected etc...

Most software is going to depend entirely on the hardware you're using - like what router you've got.

I'd like to monitor the wireless network in the house..

i.e. who is connected and the traffic that is coming through...

i have a linksys wrt54gs

Well your very limited with consumer products specially if they have no SNMP and or MIB support.

If you like have a look at OpenWrt, upgrade your router using the appropriate image and you'll have extended monitoring capabilities.

without using a professional router, or a Linux box router, you are not going to get any of the results you want, unfortunately.

Its assumed that us lowly home users dont need these things.....

ok.

Just seems to crash a lot, forever having to reset the router... well my flatmate does, even though i dont like it..

not sure if its the wireless router or virgin media

If you're using a stock firmware it's the router sadly. Flash it with Tomato or DD-WRT or OpenWRT and it won't do it, you'll also get at least some of the management features you want. Also Jesmond is rife with people using wifi or free loading on someone elses, if you're using WEP then change to something else.
