So I just got my new(ish) rig built

i5 3570k
Maximus IV Gene-Z/Gen3
8GB DDR3
SLi GTX 460 1gb

Now as you may know the Maximus has no spacing between the 2 GPUs when they are in SLi so it gets rather toasty and loud (top GPU hits around 80c bottom GPU around 70c)

Im thinking of going the single GPU route. I have been told that the HD 7950 or a 660Ti would be a good upgrade from the 460's is this correct?

What model of either card is recommended?

I am leaning towards the 7950 as it has 3gb VRam

Just how much of a difference would I see with a 7950?

Not that much in terms of max fps 10%+ (pre-overclocking), though quite a lot when clocked - easily 25% +. The best of it is that you'll get lower temps (though I think your 460 sli temps are not bad at all), and most importantly, smoother performance along with higher minimum fps - which means everything imo. It'll be a very worthwhile upgrade.

So 80c+ isnt too high then

Quite acceptable imo. My card, while running Stalker CS with a mod last night, was nearly hitting the mid 80's, and although I haven't cleaned it since last Autumn, I consider those temps to be decent. Consistency of temp readings are important. :)

Just got myself a ASUS 7950 DCU2 Top (Version 2) last week from OcUK, I can confirm it is voltage unlocked and overclocks nicely.

But it is big and takes up 3 slots.

Its a chip lottery, i bought the cheapest one i could find, XFX which was voltage locked to 1.17v and it still did 1200/1575 in CCC overdrive straight out of the box. Some people are going to all precautions to buy unlocked cards, throwing 1.35 volts at it and still getting no joy overlocking. I would look more at getting the one with the best cooler on it, as some of them are really noisey.

Hmm no point in buying a single GPU to cut down on noise only to find its just as noisy as my SLI setup?
