Proud owner of a lovely new Nikon D3100 - but now I need some bits for it. Can anyone recommend some essentials? I definitely need some sort of bag/case and looking online it's a bit of a minefield - so much to choose from! Also, any absolutely must-have budget lenses? I see people talking a lot about the 50mm 1.8? (I've got the 18-55 kit lens). I eventually want some kind of superzoom/telephoto too but they seem quite pricey.

The Nikon 55-200mm VR (about £150) or the superior albeit slightly more expensive Nikon 70-300 VR (around £380) are pretty cheap and are capable of some decent long range shots.

As for extras, you could get a flash, a fast prime lens maybe even a tripod?

Circular polarising filter is a must for nice landscape etc photos.

Don't bother with a UV filter, waste of money. A lot of people have them for protection, but if you look after your gear you'll be fine.

One of the best things I ever bought was a flash!

Roger that! I will have to do some research.

This interests me - I've had a quick look online and I can see a AF-S 55-200mm f/4-5.6 VR DX Lens - is this the one? It's £156 at the mo. I would have to save up for anything else. I'm going to Duxford in September and wanted something for the airshow.

The cheaper version wont Auto focus on the D3100.

Point taken. I would like a good portrait lens at some point, other than this 18-55 of course. Something around the £100 would be ideal.

What about bags?

I'm not familiar with filters and such like - I will have to do some more research. I will look into it though. Thanks.

If they make a battery grip for it then you'd be surprised the difference it makes to the feel of the camera. I wouldn't be without mine now.

Circular polarising filter, if you're gonna be photographing outside lots. Look up before/after shots. I got a glass jessops one off ebay for £4. Worth getting for £20 our more as very useful.
Also Lenspen for cleaning
