Morning folks

I'm looking to get a standalone DVD player that plays DivX files as my current ordinary DVD player has just given up after years of good service.

My only requirements are that it has component video out and is supported by the manufacturer with firmware updates.
I've been doing a bit of reading about and something that crops up time and time again is that there are a few good DivX playing DVD players about that look good on paper, but never fullfill their promise thanks to buggy firmware that never gets updated.

I'm keen to avoid this.

I don't want to spend much as let's face it, HD-DVD is round the corner but I want something as a nice stop gap in the mean time.

Can anyone recommend something for me?

p.s. oops, sorry I Just noticed the video/hifi section at the bottom. if someone would be kind enough to move the thread?
Thanks

Cheers :)

You'd have to look up the details, but i've got a Pioneer DV 575A player, and just bought a Pioneer DV 696 (575 discontinued) and both are excellent. I've just tested out the 696 (which has HDMI) but used the 575 a lot and can honestly say that it plays almost anything I throw at it. If you look around for the 696, you should be able to find a multi-region one. I'm not sure if it meets your requirements, but defintely worth a look. I love mine. It's about 120 pounds, including delivery. Well wortht he money in my opinion though.

i've still got my yamada dvd-6600 i bought from a high street store years ago for £30. got an enthusiast firmware on there and has never skipped a beat, multiregion etc - bit plasticky thou!

That unit does not feature component video Hate, its an OK unit (i use one myself fed via RGB into a component video converter) though so worth a look. They are very very cheap now, mine was £10 around 2 years ago in cash converters of all places.

Another vote for the 575... I've got the 585 and love it! Plays every format under the sun, nice interface and you can get them pretty cheap now.

Having a few Divx players myself, I personally wouldn't bother with them again. You'll get a file that has problems (lip sync, codec, etc) and need to use a PC for playback...connect it upto TV, put it away again etc. Build a htpc imo.

ah yes, i was getting mixed up with plain old components - still - its been sat under the TV for 3 years and i've not looked at it.

Ive found that this happens so rarely that i will judge it and either simply not watch that file, or just watch it with sync problems. Usually i'd just download another version of the file and that sorts it.

Divx players are a lot less hassle than having a PC sitting around and having to load it up etc. I work all day with computers, the last thing i need in my TV time is more of them potentially messing me about :p

Thanks guys, I'm looking at the players you mention. I did notice on one forum that Pioneer was mentioned for being bad at releasing firmware updates, but then if they get it right first time they won't have to release them!

And regarding the HTPC thingy, do they cost about £50-60?
I doubt it somehow :(

I've been reading about them and there are a lot of complaints about very long layer changes and pauses which are 4-5 seconds long. Also Toshiba apparently do not release firmware updates?

chipped xbox with XBMC for the win! Mine works perfectlly no problems at all. I also have a standalone DK one that was fine but has been struggling lately.

i have the philips dvp 5900 which got good comments over at av forums and I have found it to be a good player. Plays everything i have thrown at it, upscales dvds etc to HD and has HDMI output. Cost me abotu 60 quid on the high street..

it aint illegal, as it is your xbox. Only illegal if you are playing illegal games etc on it. But come on whoever's buying a divx player isn't exactly wanting it to play legit dvds now. ;)

its illegal to modify the hardware. theres no agrument to be had over this.

it is not illegal to chip the hardware
its illegal to flash a hacked (reverse engineered) bios

but usually the two go hand in hand :)
