Hi guys I'm allways on the look for 'different' music, non-main stream, kind of ambienty, esoterical type music, I can only think of

Murcof

Royksopp

at the moment but can anybody add to that, I like it when people mix classical with electronica if anyone knows anything like that, the most recent album I got that was quite different from the main was,

Wild Swans - Composed by Elena Kats-Chernin

what made me hunt this album out was she composed the music from the latest Lloyds TSB advert, the animated one with the train, here's a link to the track here, I'm sooooo in love with this track right now :) ,

Difficult to know exactly what you're after as Elena Kats-Chernin's music I would consider to be very different to Murcof, which in turn I would consider to be very different to Royksopp. I guess you're after a few different elements here - modern classical/minimalism, IDM/glitch and ambient. Which, funnily enough, is music I'm often on the search for :D.

For the modern/experimental classical side of things, I think you might get on with Steve Reich. Perhaps a little too minimal and lacking in strong melody, but an essential nonetheless: http://www.last.fm/music/Steve+Reich. If that's too much, then try some Philip Glass, particularly the work he did for the Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi films - though I've never listened in isolation, and it may work better with visuals. And if you like Murcof, have you listened to any Arvo Part? - consider Fur Alina, Litany, Spiegel im Spiegel. If you like Part, then try some Ligeti and Goreki.

For the classical mixed with a little electronica, I recommend Max Richter and Marsen Jules for starters. For an artist similar to Murcof, there's Jan Jelinek (also goes by the name Farben and Gramm). His Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records album is very good. Also Colleen (The Golden Morning Breaks), Deaf Center (Pale Ravine), Greg Haines (Slumber Tides), Efterklang (Springer/Tripper) and The Dead Texan (self-titled) all might be up your street...

wow great post thanks, yeh it's hard to really describe the type of music I'm looking for although you seem to understand what I mean :) , I noticed you mentiond Max Richter, that REALLY suprised me as I've never met anyone else who's even heard of him before, I own the Blue Notebooks album which I think is just stunnnnnnnning, from start to finishe it really sends you on an amazing journey and some of the short extracts of poetry that is read between tracks is really good and adds a deeper eliment to the whole album,

I a have few albums by Phillips glass, my fav being the music he composed for the horror flic 'Candyman' I love the piano peice from that album, Helens theme if I remember correctly,

I don't have any music from the other artists/composers you have mentiond (apart from Murcof) and I really look forward to exploring them in more detail, cheers.

No problem. Yes, I too am a fan of Max Richter, and agree with you about The Blue Notebooks. Definitely get the follow-up, Songs from Before. It's more of the same, which can be both a good and a bad thing. But I find Max Richter is consistently good at what he does, so it works well.
