I've been looking for an affordable NAS (Network Attached Storage) to connect to my home network and be able to access from anywhere.

Above all I'd like a storage system that would allow anyone in my house to back up their data, secondly to access my files from some form of FTP method.

Ideally > 4 TB.

Any advice is appreciated.

I wouldn't mind having some feedback on this. Although my application is work based.

Specifically for replication of the head office machine to 3 or 4 NAS boxes in remote locations.

Personally I'm leaning towards the Qnap range over Synology. They seem more business like. :)

If you don't want the hassle of building your own have a look at the range of synology boxes ds211 (2 x 2Tb), ds211j (2 x 2Tb) or ds411j (4 x 2Tb) a lot of people use synology constanly being updated and improved DSM interface.

I have been using a QNAP TS-439 since it came on the market. Hassle free piece of kit. I purchased this 4 bay version for flexibility in the future. At present I am only using 2 x 1GB mirrored drives.

Using an older Synology DS210j and it is spot on. The DSM software is good, though I have no basis for comparison. You can also get app for iphone (and probably android) to rmeote access music/photos/docs. Really easy to setup too.

I have a QNAP TS410U. Rackmount & runs really well. Can support upto 12TB IIRC. Quicker than the non-rackmount version of the TS410 due to upgraded memory. Its actually for sale at the moment if you look in the MM.

Hi,
I purchased a synology ds1511+ as I needed a 5 bays. I use Acronis software to backup onto the NAS automatically every day.

Shaf.
