Hi all,

Decided that instead of getting my parents rubbish for x-mas like I normally do, I'll get them a joint present of something they can get good use of.

At the moment they have a poor pan (cooking set) that burns your hands if not picked up correctly so anything will be an improvement over it.

I have a budget of £100 - should I be able to get a complete half-decent set for that? I'm guess buying on-line is going to be the best instead of places like j.lewis?
I know nothing about what decent makes/brands there are so ANY advice is much appreciated.

Thanks

Stick Anolon pan set into google. 4 and 5 piece sets for around £99-£105. You will notice just about every chef you see on tv using these because they are perfect for heat distribution. They will never let you down.

I like the older analon sets with the full meatl handle so you can stick them in the oven much better than the ones with a rubber grip.

Stay away from stuff like Le Creuset its style over actual quality.

I stick with lecreuset because I get discount (know a guy who works in one of their shops), and they're damn good pans, last you a lifetime, what I especially like is that if say the handle comes off or somehow you break the pan, take it into the nearest shop and they'll fix it on site.

I have a full set of Le Cresuet pans and after the impending nuclear holocaust all that will be left are bees and these pans. Superb bits of kitchen kit that will last for ever.

My only caveat is that they are very heavy which some people struggle with.

I would recommend a set of circulon pans. My parents have a set that is about 20 years old now they still work perfectly and the non stick coating is still on them.
I bought myself some about 5 years ago and the quality doesn't appear to have gone down in that time either. I also very much dislike the design of Le Creuset pans, but that's just a personal thing.

Thanks for all replies, will look into suggestions now.

The Le Cresuet has been mentioed a few times. Had an on-line look at them and they seem ok. Are they good as they claim? Or would I be paying for the 'name'.

I used to use Le Creuset but had several poor experiences with them. A non-stick frying pan wasn't in the least bit non-stick, one saucepan chipped inside, and another developed a huge crack down one side. None of them were mistreated.

I'm now a convert to the Anolon Professional range. They are much lighter and therefore easier to work with. They also have metal handles (some Le Creuset pans have wooden ones) and can therefore be put in the oven when required. The non-stick on them really does what it says on the tin, though you do have to treat it with care and make sure you don't use metal implements that might scratch it. All in all, though, I consider them much better value than Le Creuset.

You're paying for a name and a product with nothing like the even heat distribution of an analon or circulon set.

They are to look good in farmhouse kitchens. Ask yourself why you never ever see any of them used in decent cooking programs or chefs kitchens.

Turn on master chef, saturday kitchen or any of the other cooking programs on tv and you will see them using meyer pans, specifically analons.

We have a an Anolon Professional hard anodised set which are great and very hard wearing.

Thanks for all help.

I went with a 5-piece Anolon Professional set that looks as if it will be great for my parents. £95 delivered. Thanks for help :)

That's them sorted.

You'll be lucky to get 2 Circulon pans for £100 unless where I work has a 2x or more markup on them!
