Hi all,

Currently have a PCi-E 512mb nVidia 8500GT (i realise not the best but its done me up to now).

I am looking to upgrade on a budget as i have just bought a house but dont really know where to start as ive not looked at anything like this for a while.

Could someone kindly recommend an upgrade thats not too costly - new or used im not fussy as long as it works.

Cheers,

Chris.

1. What's your budget?
2. What resolution you gaming at?
3. Do you need dx11 support for the card, or not fuss about dx11 just want the best performing card for the money?
4. What's the spec of the rest of your PC?

The best budget card you can get is probably a 2nd hand 4870 1GB at around £70...no dx11 support though.

Most will recommend the HD5770, It is very energy efficient for the price £120-£130 and you will find it is a good base for all your gaming needs for a while.

There is a members market on here where people sell their gear. However, you need a certain amount of posts to access it.

If you do manage to somehow find a used graphics card, a nvidia gtx260 or ati radeon hd4870 will be a good buy too. These olders are more power hungry, but try and find it for around £80 or £90. There are ati radeon 4870 floating around new for £110 which has simular performance to the 5770.

Thanks for the replies :)

Im only running 1280x1024 tbh so dont need anything too overkill i dont think.

Budgetwise at the moment as little as possible lol up to £100 or there abouts i guess is a good marker for something half decent though.

If you are certain you won't be upgrading your monitor anytime soon...
HD5750 512MB at around £90
HD5770 512MB at around £113

2nd hand (no dx11 support):
HD4890 1GB around £90-£100
HD4870 1GB around £70
HD4850 512MB around £40-£50
9800GT 512MB around £30-£45

Yeah i wont be changing the monitor for a good while, probably not until it breaks tbh.

I was looking at a 9800GT earlier on - that could be a good option by the looks of things. Only really play things like C&C4 at the moment anyway, that and splinter cell conviction when it gets delivered but im assuming i might have to put up with low graphic settings on that one.

I'd recommend the HD 4850.I have one and i can play most games at full settings without problems and my monitor supports 1680 x 1050.

At a lower resolution like 1280 x 1024 you can play most games with a lot of eye candy.

It should be noted however I don't have any very new games (games released in 2010 for example).
