Hello fellow overclockers, i'm new to this site and quite a computer-addict and a reasonable experienced overclocker. I'm upgrading my CPU although i'm not certain what socket 775(Quad) to get for overclocking, I've been looking at the Q6600 but see that it's more or less only stable around the 3.6 "Area", i'm after something i could possibly push to 4ghz i've been looking at the Q9400 See here: (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-270-IN) I've seen some successful overclock threads about it reaching 4ghz however i'm curious as to see if there's another quad socket 775 cpu out there that's more overclock friendly? My mobo is the Asus P5Q Deluxe Intel P45 and my power supply is a OCZ 750W +12VDC Any recommendations towards my upgrade (Avoiding i7 unfortunately meanwhile and the missus won't "allow" me to splash the funds about)

I have around £170 to spent on a new quad, will possibly consider more.

Look for a 2nd hand Q9550, double the cache of that Q9400, more chance of hitting 4GHz (very good chance on that board actually) and one of the best LGA775 chips. :)

Edit: make sure it's an E0 revision chip.

Hello and welcome to the forums.:)

+1 for the q9550 EO stepping, had one of theese in an asus p5q deluxe, clocked easily to 3.8ghz, would have went higher but i sold it on to fund an i7 rig. About the best intel quad and motherboard combo you can get.

Thank you Setter.

I had thought about the Q9550 however i couldn't find a seller of a 2nd hand one so i thought i might try one step down, but now that's put me back in the state of mind to search harder for one. Although from the sites i look at that sell these processor's it seems vague on wether they're e0 or c1 is there a way to figure out they're e0 or c1?

Unfortunately the the obsession lies is my overclocking cappability, i'm just very into overclocking and very much enjoy it, and i wanted to push my limits a little more, the maximum i've overclocked was a E5400 to 4ghz stable, which i was highly proud of, I sadly can't afford an I7 set-up currently so would enjoy the next best thing. It's an expensive hobby but i enjoy it. :)

Yeah you could argue Q6600s are better value for money and still enough for gaming etc, however after seeing what's happened with the higher end 939 dual core chips, my instincts tell me depreciation on Q9550s won't be too bad. ;) Might even increase in value over the next 12-18 months if you're lucky, so they're not such a bad buy really.

The code for the EO stepping is, SLB8V

The code for the C1 stepping is, SLAWQ

Not sure if the sites yoor looking at will list this in their descriptions, and you cant link to other etailers here as it's against the rules. Generally, the C1 stepping runs a bit hotter than an EO, C1 will usually require a higher core voltage than an EO for a given clockspeed. The q6600 is a great cpu as well, provided you can source a proven clocking chip, the last production batches werent that great tbh, i was lucky enough to get a decent clocking 1.2750 vid GO stepping that hit 3.8ghz. The q6600 will run a bit warmer than a q9550 though.

Well A Q6600 @3.8ghz prime stable would need more skill than getting a Q9550 to 4ghz :p

Try this a E6400 stock clocks 2.13ghz prime stable @ 3.8ghz :D one of my best clocks to date

Very nice easy, The e6400 was a nice cpu, mate still has one but he doesnt overclock, i had the e6600 myself a few years back.

This is my old Q6600, 3.8ghz (well 3798mhz:D) on air cooling.

Took a lot of tweaking to get it stable, also had to lap both the cpu and my TRUE black.

That's quite impressive indeed as i say the best i got was a E5400 to 4ghz stable, i tried pushing more here there and everywhere but it just wouldn't have it no matter how much i argued with it ;(

Appreciate that setter i'll have a look for those codes, however the few sites i've just checked just say most of the information regarding it's specification but not the exact model, which is frustrating to say the least.

I must admit i had a blast at a Q6600 once but it wouldn't budge past 3.5 soon as i hit it to 3.6 with it the bugger would fail on me and i couldn't worm my way around it so thought the CPU was just telling me to naff off it's done it's job that'll do.

I think it's no point to push more that 100 quids into s755 platform.
For 160 you will buy i5/760, so maybe it's good idea to sell mobo, CPU & memory and buy some nice P55 stuff. Even if you are short of money then, you can still buy i3 just for beginning, they are very good for o/c ;-)

Think it depends somewhat on the application, some things will benefit more from the higher clock speed, others from the extra cache...

I wouldn't spend more than around 100, anything near 150 already gets you close to AM3 setup or if you push a bit more 2nd hand i5/i7.
At around 250 you can already get 1055T with 2nd hand mobo and ram and at around 300-350 you could get 2nd hand i5 setup.

¬100-110 is max what I'd spend on 775 cpu.

Yes a Q9550 is a lot of money but it's also a cpu that will hold it's value and as stocks dry up will actually probably go up in value. They have already increased in price since i got mine around six months ago.

People saying go down the i5 route, in my opinion, is a bad idea as well. What's the point in going from one dead socket to another. 1156 will soon be dead with the release of Sandybridge later in the year.
