Hi all,

I have just ordered my first laptop computer and as a result I also want to order my first external hard drive, problem is I know nothing about them.

I will be using the hard drive mostly to back up work documents and also to store larger media files (my music library, games, films) so I am not looking to take it around with me much it will be left on my desk.

Are there any hard drives you guys particuarly recommend?

Does the quality between products vary greatly?

Thanks

I tend to go for personal experience with hard drives. Until a week or two ago I never had a WD fail on me - and therefore that is what I used for my backup volume.

I had (dropped it from quite a height, and still able to retrieve most of the data!) and have just re-ordered, from OCUK of course, a Maxtor One Touch III external hard drive. You can password protect the drive. I had to throw it out for the above mentioned reason, but before i did took apart the case and must say i was impressed by its build quality.

If you want soemthing more portable go for a Western Digital Passport as a mate has one and i was impressed by its ability to work powered of a USB port - no need to plug in to mains. I've ordered one of these from OCUK as well.
